Topic: Vocabulary Development and Practical Grammar Usage
Sub-topic: Definitions, Identification and Practical Usage of Nouns and Pronouns
Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
- Define and explain nouns and pronouns in their own words.
- Identify nouns and pronouns in various types of sentences and paragraphs.
- Use nouns and pronouns correctly in both spoken and written English.
- Demonstrate understanding by editing faulty usage in sample texts.
- Apply vocabulary and grammar rules in context through composition and oral practice.
A – Anticipation (Engage learners)
Starter Questions:
- What are the most common words you use every day?
- Why do we use pronouns instead of repeating names or things over and over again?
Think-Pair-Share:
- Learners are given two paragraphs: one with only nouns and one with both nouns and pronouns. They compare fluency and clarity.
Brainstorming Task:
- On the board, learners list all nouns and pronouns they remember learning. Teacher organizes responses into categories (types of nouns and pronouns).
B – Building Knowledge (Core Content)
- Definitions and Recap:
- Nouns: words that name a person, place, thing, idea, or feeling.
- Pronouns: words used in place of nouns to avoid repetition.
- Examples and Clarifications:
- Nouns: Monrovia, teacher, joy, church, soap
- Pronouns: I, me, you, we, it, mine, hers, anyone, each
- Differentiating Use in Context:
- Noun: “The children went to the market.”
- Pronoun: “They went to the market.”
- Sentence Reconstruction Practice:
- Convert noun-heavy sentences to pronoun-enhanced sentences.
- E.g., “Kofi took Kofi’s pen and put Kofi’s pen in Kofi’s bag.” → “Kofi took his pen and put it in his bag.”
- Identification Practice:
- Teacher reads aloud short paragraphs. Learners identify nouns and pronouns by underlining or circling.
- Real-Life Application:
- Introduce a short story where learners highlight all nouns in blue and pronouns in red.
- Discuss how both work together to improve writing clarity.
C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection)
Class Activities:
- Sentence Correction Race: Groups are given faulty sentences containing pronoun/noun errors. The fastest correct editors win.
- Noun & Pronoun Bingo: Game where learners must listen and mark correct examples.
- Composition Task: Learners write a short story (6–8 sentences) titled “A Day I’ll Never Forget” using at least 5 different types of nouns and 4 types of pronouns.
- Oral Group Roleplay: Each group prepares a 2-minute scene using nouns and pronouns correctly and creatively.
Assignments:
- Rewrite a 10-line paragraph by replacing repeated nouns with appropriate pronouns.
- Write 10 sentences, each using at least one noun and one pronoun.
- Complete a cloze passage where learners fill in nouns and pronouns from a provided list.
