Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher writes 3 simple English sentences on the board and asks students to identify the action words (verbs).

Teacher’s Role:

  • Guide the discussion by asking: "What are action words?"
  • Transition to French by showing same sentences translated in French.

Learner’s Role:

  • Participate by identifying verbs.
  • Share what they think verbs are in both English and French.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain what a verb is in French ("Un verbe est un mot qui décrit une action ou un état.")
  • Present the 3 groups of French verbs:
    • 1er groupe: Verbs ending in -ER (e.g., parler, aimer)
    • 2e groupe: Verbs ending in -IR (e.g., finir, choisir)
    • 3e groupe: Irregular verbs (e.g., prendre, aller, faire)
  • Provide 3 examples for each group with meaning and pronunciation.
  • Play audio for pronunciation.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Listen and repeat after audio.
  • Read out loud in pairs.
  • Complete a matching exercise: match the verbs to the group they belong to.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask students to give one example of a verb from each group.
  • Oral quiz: Teacher says a verb; students name its group.

  • Verbs are action words.
  • French verbs are classified into 3 groups:
  1. Verbs ending in "-er"
  2. Verbs ending in "-ir"
  3. Irregular verbs ("-re", "-oir", etc.)
  • Examples:
    • Parler (to speak) → 1st group
    • Finir (to finish) → 2nd group
    • Prendre (to take) → 3rd group
