Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Conjugation of verbs in present, past, and future tenses.
  • Subject pronouns and basic vocabulary.

Instructional Materials

  • Flashcards with positive and negative sentences
  • Worksheets for sentence transformation
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Dialogue strips using negation
  • Printed mini-dialogues with blanks

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher writes the sentence “Je mange le riz” on the board.
  • Asks: “How do we make this negative in French?”
  • Students attempt and discuss.

Teacher’s Role:

  • Prompt learners to think critically about sentence structure.
  • Model example: “Je ne mange pas le riz.”

Learner’s Role:

  • Share ideas and attempt to restructure the sentence.
  • Practice saying it aloud.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain structure of negation:
    • ne + verb + pas = not
    • ne + verb + jamais = never
    • ne + verb + plus = no longer
  • Provide sentence examples for each:
    • Affirmative: Je regarde la télé.
      • Negative (pas): Je ne regarde pas la télé.
      • Negative (jamais): Je ne regarde jamais la télé.
      • Negative (plus): Je ne regarde plus la télé.
  • Guide students in practicing sentence transformation.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Transform 6 affirmative sentences into their negative forms using “ne…pas.”
  • Do the same for “ne…jamais” and “ne…plus.”
  • Fill in missing parts of negation in given sentences.
  • In pairs, role-play short dialogues where one student speaks affirmatively and the other negatively.

Assessment Checks:

  • Sentence construction challenge: Turn 5 positive statements into negatives.
  • Spot the error: Identify and correct wrongly negated sentences.
  • Mini quiz (oral & written): Provide correct negation for 3 verbs.

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • "ne" contracts to "n'" before vowels.
  • The verb is placed between "ne" and the second part (pas/jamais/plus).
  • Common expressions:
    • Je ne comprends pas. (I don’t understand.)
    • Elle ne mange jamais de viande. (She never eats meat.)
    • Nous ne venons plus ici. (We no longer come here.)

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Students learned to construct negative sentences in French.
  • They applied different types of negation in speaking and writing.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

  • Exit slip/quiz:
  1. Make this sentence negative: “Tu joues au foot.”
  2. Use “jamais” to negate: “Elle chante.”
  3. Use “plus” to negate: “Nous allons à l’école.”

Assignment (Expanded):

  • Write 10 affirmative French sentences and rewrite each using:
    • ne…pas
    • ne…jamais
    • ne…plus
    • (Each form used at least 3 times)

Follow-up Activity:

  • Dialogue writing: Create a short dialogue between two friends where one speaks affirmatively and the other uses negation.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Sentence frames and prompts for struggling learners.
  • Color-coded flashcards (verb/negation/subject).
  • Practice with audio for pronunciation.
