Date: Week 25
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 25, Period 5
Topic: Land and Water Distribution
Sub-topic: The Continents, Islands, and Water Distribution

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Identify the continents and islands of the world.
  2. Determine the ratio of land to water on Earth.
  3. Identify various forms of water masses (oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, rias, etc.).
  4. Discuss the importance of land and water to humans.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Names of the continents and major oceans.
  • Basic physical features of the Earth.

Instructional Materials

  • Textbook: Geography for Secondary Schools
  • Globe, maps, charts
  • Students' notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher asks: “Can anyone name all the continents? How much of the Earth is covered by water?”
  • Students share answers; teacher records responses.
Teacher’s Role: Guide discussion, correct misconceptions.
Learner’s Role: Participate and recall prior knowledge.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role & Learners’ Activities:

  • Explain continents: Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Antarctica, Australia. Show their sizes on the globe.
  • Discuss islands: Greenland, Madagascar, Borneo, etc. Show locations on maps.
  • Describe water bodies: Oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, rias. Give examples: Atlantic Ocean, Nile River, Lake Victoria.
  • Demonstrate land-to-water ratio: 29% land, 71% water.
  • Discuss importance: Transportation, irrigation, fishing, habitat for humans and animals.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask students to identify continents and water bodies on a blank map.
  • Ask: “Why is water important to human activities?”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Continents: Seven major ones, varying sizes and populations.
  • Islands: Can be continental or oceanic, vary in size.
  • Water bodies: Oceans are largest, rivers and lakes provide fresh water.
  • Land-to-water ratio influences climate, human settlement, agriculture, and trade.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Recap continents, islands, and types of water bodies.
  • Highlight importance of water for humans and the environment.

Evaluation Method:

  • Exit slip: Name three continents, two islands, and two water bodies.

Assignment:

  • Draw a world map labeling continents, five major islands, and oceans.
  • Write a paragraph on how humans utilize oceans and rivers.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies:

  • Struggling learners: Provide a labeled map for reference.
  • Advanced learners: Ask them to calculate land-to-water percentage.
  • Students with disabilities: Use tactile maps or digital globe software.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • What worked well? __________________
  • What needs improvement? ______________
  • Students’ engagement level: □ High □ Medium □ Low
  • Next steps: Continue with vegetation and mineral resources next week.
