Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define “world population.”
  2. Describe the characteristics and size of the world population.
  3. Explain terms associated with population growth and factors influencing it.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Basic concept of population.
  • Examples of local population distribution in Liberia or their region.

Instructional Materials

  • Textbook: Geography for Secondary Schools
  • Teaching aids: Maps of world population, charts, projector
  • Students’ notebooks and writing materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • The teacher asks: “What do you understand by the term population?”
  • Discuss: “Why do some countries have more people than others?”
  • Students share responses.
    Teacher’s Role:
  • Guide brainstorming, correct misconceptions, and introduce topic.
    Learner’s Role:
  • Share prior knowledge and ideas.
  • Participate verbally.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes
Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain the definition of world population.
  • Discuss characteristics: size, density, distribution, age structure, growth rate.
  • Introduce terms: birth rate, death rate, natural increase, fertility rate, mortality rate.
  • Explain factors affecting population growth (fertility, mortality, migration).
  • Explain reasons for rapid population growth (medical advances, agricultural productivity, sanitation).

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Take notes in notebooks.
  • Participate in a map activity showing densely and sparsely populated areas.
  • Answer oral questions posed by the teacher.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask students to define population in their own words.
  • Quick Q&A: “Give two factors that affect population growth.”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • World Population: All people living on Earth.
  • Characteristics: Size, density, distribution, age structure.
  • Terms:
    • Birth rate – number of births per 1000 people per year
    • Death rate – number of deaths per 1000 people per year
    • Natural increase – difference between birth and death rates
    • Fertility rate – average number of children per woman
    • Mortality rate – measure of deaths in a population
  • Factors affecting population growth: Fertility, mortality, migration, health services, economic factors.
  • Reasons for rapid growth: Improved healthcare, agricultural improvements, low mortality, urbanization.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Recall definition of world population.
  • Highlight key characteristics and growth factors.
  • Explain terms associated with population growth.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

  • Exit slip/quiz:
  1. Define “world population.”
  2. List two factors affecting population growth.
  3. Mention one reason for rapid population growth.
  • Teacher collects and quickly reviews answers.
  • Provide oral feedback before class ends.

Assignment (Expanded):

  • Students research the population of Liberia and one other country, noting size, density, and growth rate.
  • Prepare a short paragraph for the next class.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling Learners: Provide simplified definitions and examples.
  • Advanced Learners: Ask to explain how population growth affects economic development.
  • Students with Disabilities: Allow oral responses or use visual aids to support learning.

Teacher’s Reflection (After Class)

  • What worked well? ______________________________________________________
  • What needs improvement? _________________________________________________
  • Students’ engagement level: □ High □ Medium □ Low
  • Next steps: Reinforce understanding of population distribution and introduce Week 14 – World Population Distribution & Population Control.
