    • Facilitated trans-Saharan trade (gold, salt, ivory)
    • Introduced Islamic faith, literacy, and administrative practices
  • Describe growth and expansion of Ghana:
    • Territorial expansion from core settlements to trade towns
    • Factors: trade wealth, military organization, strong kingship
    • Examples: Gold mines in Wangara, salt mines in Taghaza
