Activity:
The teacher asks:
- Have you heard of the Kushite Kingdom? Where do you think it was located?
- Did you know there were pyramids in Sudan apart from those in Egypt?

Teacher shows pictures of Nubian pyramids and asks learners to compare them with Egyptian pyramids.

- Origin and Methodology of Kush
- Location: South of Egypt, in present-day Sudan.
- Sometimes called Nubia.
- Methodology: Studied through archaeology (pyramids, temples at Napata and Meroe), oral traditions, and ancient records.
- History of Kush
- Early contact with Egypt: trade in gold, ivory, ebony, and slaves.
- Developed strong political and military systems.
- Capital first at Napata, later shifted to Meroe.
- Became powerful and rivaled Egypt.
- Conquest of Egypt by Kush
- King Piye (747–716 BC) conquered Egypt, forming the 25th Dynasty (also called the Kushite Dynasty).
- Kushite Pharaohs ruled Egypt for almost 100 years.
- King Taharqa defended Egypt against the Assyrians but was eventually defeated.
- Importance: Showed Africa’s power and influence beyond its borders.
- Events of Meroe and Napata (Kushitic History)
- Napata:
- Early capital, religious center, site of pyramids.
- Kings were buried here.
- Cultural exchange with Egypt.
- Meroe:
- New capital after 590 BC.
- Known as the “city of iron” due to iron smelting.
- Strong economy from trade and agriculture.
- Women (Kandakes/Queens) played powerful roles in governance.
- Meroitic script developed (unique writing system).
- Decline came around 350 AD due to Axumite invasion.

- Students locate Kush, Napata, and Meroe on a map.
- Group activity: Role-play – some act as Egyptian traders, others as Kushite traders exchanging goods.
