Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:
The teacher asks:

  • Have you heard of the Kushite Kingdom? Where do you think it was located?
  • Did you know there were pyramids in Sudan apart from those in Egypt?
  • Can you guess how Kush and Egypt were connected?

Teacher shows pictures of Nubian pyramids and asks learners to compare them with Egyptian pyramids.

Teacher’s Role: Engage students, spark curiosity, correct misconceptions.
Learners’ Role: Respond, make guesses, share prior knowledge.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes**

Content Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  1. Origin and Methodology of Kush
  • Location: South of Egypt, in present-day Sudan.
  • Sometimes called Nubia.
  • Methodology: Studied through archaeology (pyramids, temples at Napata and Meroe), oral traditions, and ancient records.
  1. History of Kush
  • Early contact with Egypt: trade in gold, ivory, ebony, and slaves.
  • Developed strong political and military systems.
  • Capital first at Napata, later shifted to Meroe.
  • Became powerful and rivaled Egypt.
  1. Conquest of Egypt by Kush
  • King Piye (747–716 BC) conquered Egypt, forming the 25th Dynasty (also called the Kushite Dynasty).
  • Kushite Pharaohs ruled Egypt for almost 100 years.
  • King Taharqa defended Egypt against the Assyrians but was eventually defeated.
  • Importance: Showed Africa’s power and influence beyond its borders.
  1. Events of Meroe and Napata (Kushitic History)
  • Napata:
    • Early capital, religious center, site of pyramids.
    • Kings were buried here.
    • Cultural exchange with Egypt.
  • Meroe:
    • New capital after 590 BC.
    • Known as the “city of iron” due to iron smelting.
    • Strong economy from trade and agriculture.
    • Women (Kandakes/Queens) played powerful roles in governance.
    • Meroitic script developed (unique writing system).
    • Decline came around 350 AD due to Axumite invasion.

 

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  • Students locate Kush, Napata, and Meroe on a map.
  • Group activity: Role-play – some act as Egyptian traders, others as Kushite traders exchanging goods.
  • Class discussion: “Why was the conquest of Egypt by Kush significant?”
  • Students list three differences between Napata and Meroe.

  • Research and write a short paragraph on Kandake Amanirenas (a famous Kushite queen).
