Topic: Components of Physical Fitness (Part 2)
Subtopics:
a. Health-Related Fitness (Part 2): Muscular Endurance, Flexibility, Body Composition

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Define muscular endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
  2. Identify examples of each component.
  3. Engage in related physical activities.
  4. Evaluate their own flexibility and endurance levels.

Previous Knowledge:

Learners are familiar with cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength.

Instructional Materials:

  • Flexibility test video demonstration
  • Yoga mats or clean floor space
  • Stopwatch/timer
  • BMI chart and measuring tape

Anticipation (Warm-Up) – 5 minutes:

Ask:

  • Can you touch your toes while keeping your knees straight?
  • How long can you hold a squat position?

Activity:

  • Guided 2-minute stretching session

Building Knowledge (Main Lesson) – 25 minutes

Muscular Endurance:

  • The ability of a muscle to sustain repeated contractions over a period of time.
  • Example: Sit-ups, planks, squats.

Flexibility:

  • The range of motion around a joint.
  • Example: Touching toes, yoga, stretching.

Body Composition:

  • The ratio of fat to lean mass in the body.
  • Measured using BMI or observation.

Demonstrations:

  • Learners perform sit-ups for 1 minute (endurance)
  • Try reaching past toes while seated (flexibility)
  • Use measuring tape and weight to estimate BMI (body composition)

Learners’ Activities:

  • Partner activity: Measure each other's flexibility and endurance
  • Create a fitness log: Record results from flexibility and endurance tests
  • Reflect on how these components help in real-life situations

Consolidation (Review and Assessment) – 10 minutes

Review Questions:

  1. What is the difference between muscular strength and muscular endurance?
  2. Why is flexibility important?
  3. Name one way to assess body composition.

Mini Quiz:

  1. Which of these is an example of muscular endurance? A. Lifting a heavy object once
Holding a plank for 1 minute
    C. Sleeping
    D. Sitting still
  2. Flexibility helps to: A. Eat faster
    Reach and bend easily
    C. Sing better
    D. Gain weight

Homework / Assignment:

  1. Perform a 5-minute daily stretching routine for 3 days and describe the experience.
  2. Draw and label parts of the body used during stretching.
  3. Interview a fitness instructor (or watch a video) to learn how body composition is tracked.

Notes – Detailed and Explained:

Flexibility, muscular endurance, and body composition are vital for balanced health. Improving endurance helps in physical performance. Flexibility reduces injury risk and improves movement. Body composition shows overall health status.

Expanded Notes / Instructions:

  • Relate fitness to school tasks (e.g., carrying books, sitting in class)
  • Discuss healthy habits that influence body composition

Inclusive / Differentiation:

  • Offer chair-based alternatives for flexibility exercises
  • Allow peer support for those needing help with physical tasks

Teacher’s Reflection (Post-Lesson Questions):

  • Did learners understand the three new components?
  • Were they able to measure or describe their levels?
  • What should be improved next week?
