  2. Identify the equipment used in high jump.
  3. Describe the basic rules and safety tips in high jump.
  4. Recognize the layout of a high jump facility.

Previous Knowledge:

Learners have studied track events such as sprinting and are familiar with basic athletics rules.

Instructional Materials:

  • Diagrams of high jump area
  • Images of athletes performing high jump
  • Model or sketch of landing area and uprights
  • Foam mat or mattress for demonstration
  • Marker cones and measuring tape

Anticipation (Warm-Up) – 5 minutes:

Ask:

  • Have you ever tried jumping over an object?
  • What do you think makes someone a good high jumper?

Activity:

  • Light jogging and dynamic stretches (ankle hops, high knees, leg swings)

Building Knowledge (Main Lesson) – 25 minutes

Definition and Importance of High Jump:

  • High jump is a field event where an athlete jumps over a horizontal bar without knocking it down.
  • Helps build leg strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination.

Basic Equipment:

  • Crossbar (light horizontal bar)
  • Uprights (support stands)
  • Landing mat or foam pit
  • Measuring tape for height

Layout of High Jump Area:

  • Curved approach area
  • Take-off point
  • Uprights and bar
  • Landing area behind the bar

Rules of High Jump:

  1. Athlete must take off from one foot.
  2. Athlete must clear the bar without dislodging it.
  3. Three failed attempts at a given height = elimination.
  4. Measurement taken at the center of the bar.

Safety Tips:

  • Use proper landing mats.
  • Ensure bar is light and flexible.
  • Avoid overcrowding around the jump area.

Learners’ Activities:

  • Label a diagram of high jump layout.
  • Identify equipment used in high jump.
  • Watch a video of a high jump and discuss safety features.
  • Group discussion: How can you avoid injury in high jump?

Consolidation (Review and Assessment) – 10 minutes

Notes – Detailed and Explained:

High jump requires skill, precision, and safety. Athletes use one foot for take-off and must clear the bar without touching it. The event teaches coordination and technique. A proper understanding of the equipment and area layout is key for beginners.

Expanded Notes / Instructions:

  • Conduct demonstration with a soft rope or string as crossbar.
  • Emphasize spotting for landing and controlled movement.

Inclusive / Differentiation:

  • Allow less confident students to demonstrate using low ropes.
  • Use diagrams and peer explanation for learners needing extra help.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Did learners grasp the rules and safety requirements?
  • Which part of the layout was most confusing?
  • Were learners interested in trying the jump practically?
