A – Anticipation (Engagement/Warm-Up)

Motivational Set (5 minutes) Pose this question:

"What food or product did you consume today that came from a farm?"

Use learners' responses to highlight how agriculture is part of daily life. Transition by saying:

"Today, we will explore the wide variety of agricultural products in Liberia and West Africa, and see why they matter for our economy."

Teacher’s Explanation (20 minutes)

  1. What is Agriculture?

Agriculture is the practice of cultivating the soil, growing crops, and raising animals for food, clothing, and other human needs. It includes:

  • Crop farming (cash and food crops)
  • Animal husbandry (livestock)
  • Fisheries (aquatic farming)
  1. Classification of Agricultural Products
  2. Cash Crops:

Produced for sale/export to earn income.

  • Examples in Liberia: Rubber, cocoa, oil palm, coffee
  • Examples in West Africa: Cotton (Benin), cocoa (Ghana), groundnut (Nigeria)
  1. Food Crops:

Consumed by local population.

  • Examples: Rice, cassava, yams, maize, plantains
  1. Livestock:

Animals raised for meat, milk, labor, etc.

  • Examples: Cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens
  1. Fisheries:

Fish and aquatic animals used for food and commerce.

  • Examples: Tilapia, catfish, shrimp
  1. Importance to the Economy
  • Major source of employment
  • Provides raw materials for industries
  • Food security
  • Source of export revenue
  • Stimulates rural development
