  2. Distinguish between the functions of producers, wholesalers, and retailers.
  3. Analyze the flow of goods from production to final consumer.
  4. Relate the concepts to common Liberian businesses and market structures.

Instructional Materials

  • Flow chart of production chain
  • Market scene illustration (poster or projection)
  • Role-play cards for producer, wholesaler, retailer, and consumer
  • Whiteboard and markers

A – ANTICIPATION (10 minutes)

Starter Question:
“How does a bottle of oil processed in Lofa get to your kitchen in Monrovia?”

Quick Pair Discussion:
Students will discuss what people or businesses they think are involved between the manufacturer and their own homes.

Purpose: To activate prior knowledge of supply chain roles.

B – BUILDING KNOWLEDGE (30 minutes)

  1. Definitions
  • Producer: A person or business that creates goods or services using land, labor, and capital.
Example: Golden Oil Company in Liberia.
  • Wholesaler: A trader who buys large quantities of goods from producers and sells them to retailers in smaller quantities.
Example: Bulk rice importers in Monrovia.
  • Retailer: A trader who sells goods directly to final consumers in small units.
Example: Shopkeepers, market women, and street vendors.

  1. Flow of Goods

  1. Activity: Role-Play Simulation

Instructions:

  • Students form groups of four. Each student takes a role: producer, wholesaler, retailer, or consumer.
  • Using paper cutouts (representing goods), simulate how palm oil moves from farm to kitchen.
  • Discuss the value added and profit made at each stage.

C – CONSOLIDATION (5 minutes)

Quick Review Questions:

  1. Who is a wholesaler?
  2. What is the difference between a retailer and a producer?
  3. In the Liberian economy, who are the key producers of cassava products?
  4. Can a business perform both wholesale and retail functions?

Assignment:

In a one-page essay, pick any product you use at home (e.g., rice, soap, oil) and:

  • Identify its producer, wholesaler, and retailer (if known)
  • Describe how it moves from factory/farm to your home
  • Identify one challenge faced by each of the three actors

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Did students clearly understand the movement of goods from production to consumption?
  • Were learners able to role-play and describe real-life examples relevant to the Liberian context?
  • Did the diagrams and flowchart enhance comprehension?
