Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify commonly misspelled English words.
  2. Apply spelling rules to correctly spell challenging words.
  3. Use spelling strategies to enhance written accuracy.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What are some words that are difficult for you to spell?
  • Have you ever written a word that looked strange even though you thought it was correct?

Think-Pair-Share: Think: List 3 words you often find difficult to spell.
Pair: Exchange your list with a partner. Correct each other’s spelling and discuss why they might be confusing.
Share: Volunteers write some commonly misspelled words on the board.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Commonly Misspelled Words List:
    • accommodate, definitely, separate, government, occasion, their/there/they’re, receive, believe, argument, environment
  2. Spelling Rules:
    • I before E except after C: (believe, receive)
    • Double the final consonant when adding a suffix to a short vowel word: (run → running)
    • Drop the silent ‘e’ before adding a suffix beginning with a vowel: (hope → hoping)
    • Keep the ‘e’ when the suffix starts with a consonant: (hope → hopeful)
  3. Strategies for Mastery:
    • Break words into syllables
    • Use mnemonic devices (e.g., “Necessary has one collar and two sleeves”)
    • Practice writing and using words in sentences
  4. Common Confusions:
    • Homophones: their/there/they’re
    • Silent letters: knowledge, pneumonia, doubt
    • Irregular patterns: Wednesday, February, foreign

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

In-Class Exercise:

  1. Correct the spelling errors in the following sentences:
    • I definately recieved the invetation for the ocassion.
    • The enviroment is not well mantained by the goverment.
  2. Fill in the blanks with the correct spelling:
    • I always ______ (believe/belieeve) in working hard.
    • They couldn’t ______ (accomodate/accommodate) all the guests.
  3. Dictation Practice:
    • Teacher reads out 10 commonly misspelled words for students to write.

Assignment:

  • Choose 10 commonly misspelled words. For each word:
    • Write the correct spelling three times.
    • Use each in a grammatically correct sentence.
    • Identify the spelling rule or reason the word is tricky.
