Topic: Constructing Effective Paragraphs: Unity and Coherence

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify the structure of a well-developed paragraph.
  2. Write unified and coherent paragraphs.
  3. Use appropriate transitions to maintain logical flow.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What makes a paragraph easy to understand?
  • Have you ever read a paragraph that confused you? Why?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Read a poorly written paragraph and highlight what makes it unclear. Pair: With a partner, discuss how to improve it. Share: Propose a revised version to the class.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Parts of a Paragraph:
    • Topic Sentence: Introduces the main idea.
    • Body Sentences: Support and develop the main idea with examples, facts, or explanations.
    • Concluding Sentence: Summarizes or reinforces the topic.
  2. Unity in Paragraphs:
    • Every sentence must relate to the main idea.
    • Avoid going off-topic or including unrelated details.
  3. Coherence:
    • Sentences must follow a logical order (chronological, cause-effect, etc.).
    • Use transitions for smooth flow (e.g., first, next, then, however, therefore).
  4. Sample Paragraph (Coherent):
    • "One reason why reading is important is that it improves vocabulary. When you read new words in context, you learn how to use them. As your vocabulary grows, you become a better writer and speaker. Therefore, reading daily can significantly improve communication skills."
  5. Sample Paragraph (Lacks Unity):
    • "Dogs are friendly animals. I went to the market yesterday. They are also good guards."
    • Discussion: What doesn’t fit?

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activities:

  1. Rearranging scrambled sentences into a logical paragraph.
  2. Add a concluding sentence to a given incomplete paragraph.
  3. Write a paragraph on: "Why school rules are important" ensuring unity and coherence.

Assignment:

  • Choose one topic: a) My favorite holiday b) How to help a friend in need c) A lesson I learned recently
  • Write a paragraph (8–10 sentences) with clear topic sentence, supporting details, and conclusion.
  • Highlight transition words used.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were students able to organize thoughts clearly in paragraph form?
  • Did learners successfully apply unity and coherence techniques?
  • Who needs more practice using topic and concluding sentences?
