Topic: Developing Paragraphs: The Body, Topic Sentences, and Conclusions

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify and write effective topic sentences.
  2. Support main ideas with relevant examples and explanations.
  3. Construct strong concluding sentences.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What makes a sentence the “main idea” of a paragraph?
  • Can you tell when a paragraph is unfinished? What’s missing?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Read two short paragraphs and highlight the topic and concluding sentences. Pair: Discuss with a partner which one is clearer and why. Share: Share thoughts about what makes a paragraph effective.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. The Topic Sentence:
    • Usually the first sentence in a paragraph.
    • Tells the reader what the paragraph is about.
    • Example: "Teamwork is essential to success in school projects."
  2. Developing the Body:
    • Add explanations, examples, and details.
    • Stay focused on the main idea.
    • Use signal words (for example, for instance, in addition).
  3. Concluding Sentence:
    • Wraps up the paragraph.
    • Reinforces the main idea.
    • Example: "Therefore, every student should practice teamwork for better results."

Examples for Analysis:

  • Paragraph without a topic sentence.
  • Paragraph without details in the body.
  • Paragraph missing a conclusion.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activities:

  1. Write a topic sentence for this prompt: “The importance of exercise.”
  2. Add 3 supporting sentences to develop the paragraph.
  3. Write a concluding sentence.
  4. Exchange paragraphs with a peer and suggest improvements.

Assignment:

  • Write a complete paragraph (topic sentence, 3–4 body sentences, conclusion) on: a) How mobile phones help students in school b) My dream job
    • Underline the topic sentence and circle the concluding sentence.
