Starter Questions:
- Have you used a dictionary recently?
- What do the two words at the top of a dictionary page tell you?
Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Write three random words (e.g., success, banana, zebra) and guess which would come first in a dictionary. Pair: Compare your order with your partner’s. Share: Volunteers share their list and justify their order using alphabetical reasoning.
B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):
- Alphabetical Order:
- Always start comparing from the first letter, then the second, and so on.
- Example Order: apple, banana, band, cat
- Guide Words:
- Found at the top corners of each dictionary page.
- First word (left page) and last word (right page) help you know what words are included.
- Example: If the guide words are bring – brush, the word broom will be on that page.
- Using the Dictionary Effectively:
- Identify: spelling, pronunciation, word meaning, part of speech.
- Example Entry: run (v.) – to move quickly by foot
- Example Entry: light (adj.) – not heavy
- Parts of Speech Symbols:

- Misreading guide words → checking wrong page
