Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Arrange words in correct alphabetical order.
  2. Use guide words effectively to locate entries in a dictionary.
  3. Identify and describe the parts of speech listed in dictionary entries.
  4. Use the dictionary to find meanings, correct spellings, and word classifications.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • Have you used a dictionary recently?
  • What do the two words at the top of a dictionary page tell you?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Write three random words (e.g., success, banana, zebra) and guess which would come first in a dictionary. Pair: Compare your order with your partner’s. Share: Volunteers share their list and justify their order using alphabetical reasoning.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Alphabetical Order:
    • Always start comparing from the first letter, then the second, and so on.
    • Example Order: apple, banana, band, cat
  2. Guide Words:
    • Found at the top corners of each dictionary page.
    • First word (left page) and last word (right page) help you know what words are included.
    • Example: If the guide words are bringbrush, the word broom will be on that page.
  3. Using the Dictionary Effectively:
    • Identify: spelling, pronunciation, word meaning, part of speech.
    • Example Entry: run (v.) – to move quickly by foot
    • Example Entry: light (adj.) – not heavy
  4. Parts of Speech Symbols:
    • – noun
    • – verb
    • – adjective
    • – adverb
  5. Common Errors:
    • Misreading guide words → checking wrong page
    • Forgetting alphabetical rules → misordering entries

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activity:

  1. Rearrange these words alphabetically: egg, ape, eager, angle, echo.
  2. Using a physical or online dictionary, locate the guide words on any page.
  3. Find the entry for “bright” and write:
    • Its part of speech
    • One definition
    • One sentence using it in context

Assignment: Use a dictionary to complete the table:

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were students able to interpret guide words correctly?
  • Could they distinguish and apply different parts of speech?
  • Which students need more support using dictionaries efficiently?
