Topic: Library Skills – Using the Card Catalog and Online Catalog

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Explain what a card catalog and online catalog are.
  2. Identify components of a card/online catalog: title, author, subject, call number.
  3. Locate books and resources in a school or public library using the catalog.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever searched for a book in a library? How did you find it?
  • What do you think a call number means?

Think-Pair-Share Activity: Think: Write down the last book you searched for in a library or online. Pair: Share your experience and the method you used with a partner. Share: Select a few students to explain what they know about library organization.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Definition of Card Catalog and Online Catalog:
    • A card catalog is a manual filing system arranged alphabetically by author, title, or subject.
    • Online catalog (OPAC) is a digital version that allows users to search for materials electronically.
  2. Components of the Catalog Entry:
    • Title: The name of the book or material.
    • Author: The person who wrote the book.
    • Subject: What the book is about.
    • Call Number: A unique code assigned to the book for its location on the shelf (e.g., 823.91 SHA).
  3. Types of Materials in the Library:
    • Fiction, nonfiction, reference books, magazines, newspapers, digital resources, audiovisuals.
  4. How to Use the Catalog to Find Materials:
    • Identify your need (book title, author, or subject).
    • Search manually or electronically.
    • Write down the call number.
    • Go to the right section in the library (shelves marked by number ranges).

Examples:

  • Searching for "Chinua Achebe" under author in catalog → Book: Things Fall Apart → Call No: 823.91 ACH
  • Searching for "Civil Rights Movement" under subject → Various titles → Find by call numbers.

Practical Demo (if resources allow):

  • Use the school library or a printed catalog sheet to search and locate a book.
  • Let students browse the online catalog (if internet is available).

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

In-Class Activity:

  • Provide mock catalog entries for 5 books. Let students:
    • Identify the title, author, and subject.
    • Write down the call numbers.
    • Match call numbers to the correct shelf.

Sample Catalog Entry:

  • Author: John Green
Title: The Fault in Our Stars
    Subject: Young Adult Fiction
    Call Number: 823.91 GRE

Assignment:

  • Visit the school or public library.
    • Choose any one book.
    • Record the title, author, subject, and call number.
    • Write 3-5 lines explaining how you found the book.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Did students understand the structure and function of the catalog?
  • Were they able to interpret call numbers and catalog entries?
  • Who needs more practice with searching and identifying materials in the library?
