Specific Objectives:

  2. Analyze and interpret the meanings of words using their components.
  3. Apply knowledge of affixes to decode unfamiliar vocabulary.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What does the prefix “un-” in “unhappy” mean?
  • Can you find smaller parts in a long word that help you understand its meaning?

Think-Pair-Share: Think: Write a word you know with a prefix or suffix. Pair: Compare with a partner and identify the prefix/suffix. Share: Volunteers break down their words into prefix/root/suffix and explain.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Definition of Terms:
    • Prefix: A syllable added at the beginning of a word to change its meaning. (e.g., pre- in preview)
    • Root: The core part of the word that gives the base meaning. (e.g., view in preview)
    • Suffix: A syllable added at the end of a word to modify its meaning. (e.g., -ful in hopeful)
  2. Common Prefixes and Meanings:
    • un- (not), re- (again), dis- (opposite of), pre- (before), mis- (wrongly)
    • Examples: unhappy, rewrite, disconnect, prepay, misplace
  3. Common Suffixes and Meanings:
    • -ful (full of), -less (without), -ness (state of), -able (can be)
    • Examples: joyful, careless, darkness, readable
  4. Root Words and Their Origins:
    • spect (to look) → inspect, respect, spectator
    • port (to carry) → transport, export, import

In-Class Exercise:

  1. Break down the following words into prefix, root, and suffix:
    • misunderstood, enjoyment, transporter, unkindness, rebuild
  2. Match the word to its meaning:
    • replay → a. unable to be used
    • useless → b. to play again
    • prepaid → c. paid before use

Assignment:

  • Write five new words using a prefix, root, and suffix. For each word:
    • Identify the prefix, root, and suffix
    • Write the meaning of the entire word
    • Use it in a complete sentence
