Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize and correct common grammatical errors.
  2. Identify sentence fragments, run-on sentences, and shift in pronouns.
  3. Apply correct capitalization and abbreviation rules.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever submitted a paragraph or essay and later found errors?
  • Why is proofreading important in writing?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Review a poorly written paragraph full of errors. Pair: Work with a partner to mark and correct mistakes. Share: Discuss how correcting those mistakes improved clarity.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Mechanics of Grammar:
    • Use of capital letters (start of sentences, proper nouns)
    • Punctuation: periods, commas, question marks
    • Correct spelling: common spelling errors (e.g., there/their/they’re)
  2. Common Errors:
    • Sentence fragments: Missing subject or verb.
      • Example: Went to the store.He went to the store.
    • Run-on sentences: Two complete thoughts joined without punctuation.
      • Example: He ran he fell.He ran, and he fell.
    • Shift in pronouns: Switching from "you" to "they" or "one" mid-sentence.
      • Incorrect: If one wants to succeed, you must study.
      • Correct: If one wants to succeed, one must study.
  1. Capitalization & Abbreviation:
    • Capitalize names, titles, countries, first word in a sentence.
    • Abbreviate properly: Mr., Dr., St., etc.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

  1. Correct the following: a) i love english it is fun b) went to market bought fruits c) if a student studies you will pass
  2. Rewrite these with correct punctuation and capitalization: a) yesterday john and i went to liberia b) she is smart she always studies
  3. Identify fragments and fix them: a) After the exam. b) Running very fast.

Assignment:

  • Proofread the following paragraph and rewrite it correctly: *"my teacher said we should study hard she also say that test is friday i dont like test but i will do my best."
  • Use correct punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and spelling.
