Topic: Proper Verb Usage and Introduction to Voice in Grammar

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize proper verb usage in different sentence structures.
  2. Differentiate between active and passive voice.
  3. Identify when and how to use active and passive voice in writing.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What is the difference between "She eats the apple" and "The apple is eaten by her"?
  • Which one sounds more direct or stronger?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Students write two sentences about their day—one using active voice, one using passive. Pair: Exchange with a partner to identify which sentence is which. Share: Volunteers read theirs aloud and explain their structure.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Proper Verb Usage:
    • Ensure subject-verb agreement.
    • Match tense with intended meaning and time frame.
    • Avoid tense shifts within a sentence or paragraph.
    • Example Errors:
      • Incorrect: She go to school every day. → Correct: She goes to school every day.
  1. Voice in Grammar:
    • Active Voice: The subject performs the action.
      • Example: The teacher teaches the lesson.
    • Passive Voice: The subject receives the action.
      • Example: The lesson is taught by the teacher.
  1. Forming Passive Voice:
    • [Form of "to be"] + [Past Participle]
    • Tense Examples:
      • Present: The meal is cooked.
      • Past: The meal was cooked.
      • Future: The meal will be cooked.
  1. When to Use Active vs. Passive:
    • Use active for clarity and strength.
    • Use passive when the actor is unknown or unimportant.
    • Example: Mistakes were made (passive, actor unknown).

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection): Class Activities:

  1. Convert 5 sentences from active to passive and vice versa.
  2. Identify whether the following sentences are active or passive:
    • The door was opened by Sam.
    • The students completed the assignment.
    • The books are being packed by the librarian.
  3. Fill in the blanks:
    • The cake ___ (bake) by my sister. → is baked
    • The match ___ (play) yesterday. → was played

Assignment:

  • Write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) about a class event.
  • Use at least 3 active and 2 passive voice sentences.
  • Underline all verbs and label voice (A = Active, P = Passive).

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were learners able to correctly identify voice in sentences?
  • Did students apply verb structure rules appropriately?
  • Who needs support shifting between active and passive structures?
