Topic: Reading Comprehension – Active Reading Strategies

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Apply the three phases of active reading (before, during, after).
  2. Use scanning and skimming techniques effectively.
  3. Use graphic organizers like KWL (Know, Want to know, Learned) to support reading comprehension.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What do you do before reading a new chapter in your textbook?
  • Do you ever write or highlight while reading? Why?

Think-Pair-Share Activity: Think: What is the difference between reading and active reading? Pair: Discuss with a partner what you usually do while reading. Share: Groups share tips or habits they’ve used for better understanding.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Active Reading Phases:
    • Before Reading: Survey title, headings, and pictures; ask questions.
    • During Reading: Highlight key points, write margin notes, underline unfamiliar words.
    • After Reading: Summarize, re-read confusing parts, answer comprehension questions.
  2. Techniques:
    • Scanning: Quickly searching for specific information (e.g., dates, names).
    • Skimming: Reading quickly for general ideas or main points.
    • SQ4R Method (to preview and study a text):
      • Survey
      • Question
      • Read
      • Record
      • Recite
      • Review
  1. KWL Chart Introduction:

K (What I Know)

W (What I Want to Know)

L (What I Learned)

Model Example:

  • Topic: Climate Change
  • K: The weather is changing.
  • W: What causes climate change?
  • L: Climate change is caused by greenhouse gases.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

In-Class Activity:

  • Use a short article on a familiar topic (e.g., "The Effects of Deforestation").
    • Complete a KWL chart before and after reading.
    • Use scanning to find all statistics in the article.
    • Skim for the main idea and supporting points.

Group Work:

  • Each group selects a section of a longer passage.
  • Identify which active reading techniques they used.
  • Share findings with the class.

Assignment:

  • Read a one-page news article or textbook page.
    • Write down:
      • 3 facts you scanned
      • 2 ideas you skimmed for
      • 1 summary sentence

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Did learners understand how to apply each phase of active reading?
  • Were they able to explain their use of skimming and scanning?
  • Which learners need help identifying main ideas vs details?
