A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):
Starter Questions:
- What do you do when you don’t understand a part of a text?
- Why do some questions seem easier to answer than others after reading a passage?
Think-Pair-Share Activity:
Think: What do direct questions ask you to do after reading a passage? Pair: With a partner, come up with one direct and one critical thinking question based on any story you’ve read.
Share: Write examples on the board and discuss how to answer them.
B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):
- Types of Reading Comprehension Questions:
- Direct Questions: Answers are found clearly stated in the passage (literal).
- Critical Thinking Questions: Require reasoning, drawing conclusions, or making inferences.
- Strategies for Answering Comprehension Questions:
- Read the questions first (before reading the text).
- Highlight key phrases in the passage.
- Skim for main ideas, scan for specific information.
- Paraphrase answers in your own words.
- Use elimination method for multiple choice.
- Example Practice Passage: "Malaria remains one of the biggest health problems in Africa. Many families have lost loved ones. Though preventable, poor sanitation and ignorance still cause its spread."
Sample Questions:
- What disease is discussed in the passage? (Direct)
- Why do you think malaria continues to spread? (Critical)
- Suggest two ways malaria can be prevented. (Critical)
C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
In-Class Activity:
- Provide a short story or non-fiction passage.
- Let students:
- Read silently.
- Answer 5 direct questions.
- Answer 3 critical thinking questions.
Group Work:
- Divide students into groups.
- Each group creates 2 direct and 2 critical thinking questions from a paragraph.
- Exchange with another group to answer.
Assignment:
- Choose a short story from your English Literature book.
- Write a one-paragraph summary.
- Frame and answer 3 direct and 2 critical thinking questions from it.
