Topic: Reading Comprehension – Scanning, Skimming, and the SQ4R Method

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Distinguish between scanning and skimming.
  2. Apply the SQ4R method when reading academic texts.
  3. Improve reading speed and comprehension accuracy.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What do you do when you need to find a date or number quickly in a textbook?
  • What do you do if you only want to get the main idea from a whole page?

Think-Pair-Share Activity:

Think: What’s the difference between reading for fun and reading to study? Pair: Talk about which strategy you think is faster: scanning or skimming. Share: Volunteers give examples when they used either method.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Scanning:
    • Used to locate specific information quickly (e.g., names, dates, definitions).
    • Move eyes rapidly down the page.
    • Don’t read every word.

Example Task: Find today’s weather forecast on a full-page article.

  1. Skimming:
    • Used to get the general idea.
    • Read titles, subtitles, first/last paragraphs.

Example Task: Skim a newspaper editorial and summarize its key message.

  1. SQ4R Method for Studying:
    • Survey: Preview headings, visuals.
    • Question: Turn headings into questions.
    • Read: Look for answers.
    • Record: Take brief notes.
    • Recite: Summarize out loud or in writing.
    • Review: Revisit the text.

Model Application:

  • Text: A science article on global warming.
  • Survey: Headings—“What is Global Warming?” “Its Causes.”
  • Question: What is global warming?
  • Read and Record: “Rising temperatures due to greenhouse gases.”
  • Recite and Review: Learners explain findings to partners.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Class Practice:

  • Students work in pairs:
    • Scan a science article for dates and stats.
    • Skim a story for the theme.
    • Apply SQ4R on a short nonfiction passage.

Group Work:

  • Groups apply SQ4R to a selected passage from their textbooks.
  • Each group answers comprehension questions and presents findings.

Assignment:

  • Choose a topic from any subject textbook.
    • Apply the full SQ4R method.
    • Submit:
      • Questions you formed
      • Notes taken
      • A short summary paragraph

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Did students differentiate between scanning and skimming?
  • How well did they apply the SQ4R steps?
  • Were students more engaged in understanding complex material?
