Topic: Reading Comprehension – SQ4R Review and Integration of Skills

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Integrate skimming, scanning, and the SQ4R method into their reading habits.
  2. Collaboratively review comprehension strategies and apply them.
  3. Complete complex reading tasks and demonstrate understanding through oral and written expression.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • What reading strategy do you find easiest? Hardest? Why?
  • Can you describe a time SQ4R helped you learn better?

Group Brainstorm:

  • Learners list all reading strategies learned in previous weeks on the board.
  • Highlight overlaps, connections, and when to use each.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Review of Key Strategies:
    • Skimming for main ideas.
    • Scanning for facts.
    • SQ4R method as a complete framework.
  2. Strategy Integration Activity:
    • Distribute a complex text (2–3 paragraphs) from a science or literature text.
    • Apply all three strategies:
      • Skim for title, first lines of paragraphs.
      • Scan for names, places, dates.
      • SQ4R: Survey the passage, create 2–3 questions, read and highlight answers, take brief notes, summarize aloud.
  1. Comprehension Check:
    • Direct questions (literal): What is the main argument?
    • Inferential: What does the author imply?
    • Evaluative: Do you agree with the writer’s stance? Why or why not?

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Class Activity:

  • Break into three groups:
  1. Apply skimming only and summarize the passage.
  2. Apply scanning only to gather statistics or examples.
  3. Use the full SQ4R method to read and report.

Role Play:

  • Each group explains the method they used and why it was effective.

Assignment:

  • Choose one long nonfiction article (minimum 500 words).
    • Apply the SQ4R process.
    • Write:
      • A brief summary.
      • Five comprehension questions.
      • One paragraph reflection: “Which reading strategy worked best for me and why?”

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were learners confident in using all strategies together?
  • Did students improve in comprehension, speed, and retention?
  • What support will be needed for the next reading unit?
