A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever given a speech in school or church? How did you feel?
  • What makes a speech memorable or boring?

Activity:

  • Watch a short video of a student delivering a speech (e.g., on graduation or leadership).
  • Class discussion: What worked well in the speech? What could be improved?

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Definition and Purpose of Speech Writing:
  • A speech is a formal address delivered to an audience.
  • It informs, persuades, or motivates listeners.
  1. Parts of a Speech:
  • Introduction: Greeting, hook, purpose.
  • Body: Main points with supporting examples.
  • Conclusion: Summary, call to action, appreciation.
  1. Features of Effective Speech:
  • Clarity, brevity, tone, rhythm.
  • Use of persuasive devices: rhetorical questions, repetition, emotional appeal.
  • Audience awareness: Formal vs informal tone.

Examples:

  • Speech to campaign for class president.
  • Speech on climate change or the importance of girl-child education.

Model Speech Breakdown:

  • As a class, analyze a sample speech paragraph-by-paragraph and identify structure and devices.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Class Activity:

  • Each student selects a topic (e.g., "Why I want to be Head Girl/Head Boy") and writes the first two paragraphs of a speech.
  • In pairs, students exchange speeches and provide peer feedback.

Assignment:

  • Write a full speech (minimum 250 words) for the school’s Independence Day celebration or Anti-Bullying campaign.
  • Highlight the introduction, body, and conclusion using different colored pens.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were students able to follow structure and write persuasively?
  • Did they reflect audience awareness and proper tone?
  • Who needs more help with organizing ideas and transitions?
