- Definition of a Verb Form: The various ways a verb can change to reflect tense or subject agreement.
- The Five Forms of a Verb:
- Base Form: The simplest form of a verb (e.g., start)
- s/Form (3rd person singular): Adds 's' or 'es' (e.g., starts)
- -ing Form (Present Participle): Describes ongoing action (e.g., starting)
- Past Tense Form: Simple past (e.g., started)
- Past Participle: Used with auxiliaries (e.g., has/have started)
Examples Using the Verb "Start":
- Base Form: I start my work early.
- s/Form: He starts at 9 a.m.
- -ing Form: She is starting her homework.
- Past: We started the journey late.
- Past Participle: They have started already.
Verb Form Chart Practice (Classwork): Students complete a chart by filling out the five forms for the following base verbs: run, write, begin, cook, drive
Common Errors and Clarification:
- Confusing past with past participle (e.g., I have went ✗ should be I have gone ✓)
