Starter Questions:

  • Can you list different forms a verb might take?
  • What’s the difference between "start" and "has started"?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Students write down any five verb forms they know.
Pair: They compare with a partner to discuss differences.
Share: Volunteers share sample sentences aloud using any form.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Definition of a Verb Form: The various ways a verb can change to reflect tense or subject agreement.
  2. The Five Forms of a Verb:
    • Base Form: The simplest form of a verb (e.g., start)
    • s/Form (3rd person singular): Adds 's' or 'es' (e.g., starts)
    • -ing Form (Present Participle): Describes ongoing action (e.g., starting)
    • Past Tense Form: Simple past (e.g., started)
    • Past Participle: Used with auxiliaries (e.g., has/have started)

Examples Using the Verb "Start":

  • Base Form: I start my work early.
  • s/Form: He starts at 9 a.m.
  • -ing Form: She is starting her homework.
  • Past: We started the journey late.
  • Past Participle: They have started already.

Verb Form Chart Practice (Classwork): Students complete a chart by filling out the five forms for the following base verbs: run, write, begin, cook, drive

Common Errors and Clarification:

  • Confusing past with past participle (e.g., I have went ✗ should be I have gone ✓)

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection): Class Activities:

  1. Identify the form of the underlined verb in each sentence.
  2. Rewrite a short paragraph replacing base verbs with a mix of other forms.
  3. Create 5 original sentences using each of the five verb forms.

  2. I ___ to school on foot. (go)
  3. They are ___ to the village. (going)
  4. He ___ yesterday. (went)
