Topic: Verb Usage – Present Perfect and Past Perfect Tenses

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize and use present perfect and past perfect tenses in speech and writing.
  2. Identify the differences in usage between both tenses.
  3. Construct sentences using both tenses to show relationships between actions.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever traveled outside your community?
  • Had you eaten before coming to class this morning?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Write two sentences – one using "have/has" to talk about an experience, and one using "had" to describe a sequence of past events. Pair: Share with a partner and discuss if the verb forms are correct. Share: Volunteers read aloud. The teacher corrects mistakes and explains tense distinctions.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Present Perfect Tense:
    • Used for actions that occurred at an unspecified time or that continue to the present.
    • Structure: Subject + has/have + past participle
    • Examples: She has gone to the market. / I have eaten breakfast.
  2. Past Perfect Tense:
    • Describes actions completed before another action in the past.
    • Structure: Subject + had + past participle
    • Examples: They had left before I arrived.
  3. Comparison Table:

Present Perfect(Action relevant to present)- I have finished my homework.

Past Perfect(Action completed before another)- He had gone before she called.

  1. Common Errors:
    • Using present perfect with specific time: ❌ I have seen him yesterday. → ✅ I saw him yesterday.
    • Confusing past perfect and past simple: ❌ I had went home. → ✅ I had gone home.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activity:

  1. Fill in the blanks using the correct tense:
  2. a) She ______ (have) her lunch already.
  3. b) They ______ (finish) the task before the bell rang.
  4. c) I ______ (see) that movie three times.
  5. d) We ______ (leave) when the rain started.
  6. Underline the verbs and identify the tense:
  7. a) He has spoken to the teacher.
    b) I had closed the door before she entered.
  8. Rewrite correcting tense errors:
  9. a) They has gone home already. → ______
  10. b) I have see him this morning. → ______

Assignment:

  • Write a paragraph about something you’ve done this year that you had never done before. Use at least three present perfect and two past perfect verbs. Underline and label them.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Could students identify the present and past perfect correctly?
  • Were they able to construct appropriate examples independently?
  • Who needs support distinguishing perfect tenses from simple tenses?
