Topic: Verb Usage – Using Past Continuous and Present Simple Tenses

Specific Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Use verbs in the past continuous and present simple tenses correctly.
  2. Construct clear and grammatically correct sentences using both tenses.
  3. Recognize and differentiate between actions happening now and those that were ongoing in the past.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What were you doing at 7 p.m. last night?
  • What do you usually do every Saturday morning?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Individually write two sentences: one describing a current habit and one describing an activity you were doing yesterday. Pair: Share and compare your sentences with a partner. Share: Volunteers read their examples aloud. The teacher highlights the correct usage of present simple and past continuous.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Present Simple Tense:
    • Used for regular actions or universal truths.
    • Examples: He goes to school every day. / Water boils at 100°C.
    • Structure: Subject + base verb (+s/es)
  2. Past Continuous Tense:
    • Describes an action that was ongoing in the past.
    • Examples: She was reading when the lights went off.
    • Structure: Subject + was/were + verb-ing
  3. Comparison Table:

Present Simple(Habitual/Regular actions)- She studies at 6 PM.

Past Continuous(Ongoing past actions)- They were playing football then.

  1. Common Errors:
    • Don’t use present simple for ongoing actions: ❌ I play football now. → ✅ I am playing football now.
    • Avoid mixing tenses inappropriately: ❌ She was danced when he comes.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activity:

  1. Fill in the blanks with either present simple or past continuous:
  2. a) While she ______ (cook), the baby cried.
  3. b) They ______ (go) to church every Sunday.
  4. c) I ______ (watch) TV when my phone rang.
  5. d) He always ______ (forget) his book.
  6. Underline the verbs in the sentences and label them as present simple or past continuous:
  7. a) She was doing her homework.
  8. b) The train leaves at 9 a.m.
  9. c) They were shouting at each other.
  10. Identify and correct the errors:
  11. a) He go to school every day. → ______
  12. b) We was dancing. → ______

Assignment:

  • Write a short paragraph (6–8 sentences) describing a day in your life using at least three present simple and three past continuous verbs. Underline all verb phrases and label the tense used.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were learners able to differentiate the two tenses clearly?
  • Did learners construct accurate examples in speech and writing?
  • Who may require remedial help with tense agreement and usage?
