By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  3. Write a book report with clear structure, correct grammar, and proper verb tenses.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • Have you ever read a book that you wanted to tell others about?
  • What important things do you think you should include when telling someone about a book?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Think about your favorite story or novel.
Pair: Share its title and what it is about with a partner.
Share: Share your partner’s story summary with the class.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. What is a Book Report?
    • A written summary and evaluation of a book.
  2. Key Elements of a Book Report:
    • Title and Author
    • Main Characters
    • Setting (time and place)
    • Plot Summary
    • Theme
    • Opinion and Recommendation
  3. Grammar Focus:
    • Use past tense for events that happened in the book.
    • Use present tense when stating universal truths or describing characters.
  4. Sample Report Structure:
    • “The book I read is ‘The River Between’ by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o. The main character is Waiyaki, a young leader caught between tradition and change. The story is set in Kenya during the colonial period…”

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection): Class Activities:

  1. Review a short story or extract in class.
  2. Identify and write down the title, author, main characters, and plot.
  3. Work in pairs to create a brief book report using a structured template.

In-class Assessment:

  • Write a short book report (1–2 paragraphs) on a known story or book you’ve read.
  • Include at least four components: title, plot, character, theme.
  • Underline all verbs and indicate the tenses used (past, present, progressive).

Assignment:

  • Choose a short novel or story from the approved reading list.
  • Write a full book report (2 pages) using the class template.
  • Highlight all action verbs and label their tense.
