  3. Organize an essay with unity and coherence.

A – Anticipation (Engage learners):
Starter Questions:

  • What topics do you enjoy writing about?
  • What makes a topic interesting to a reader?

Think-Pair-Share:
Think: Students write a topic they would like to write about and why.
Pair: Share with a partner and discuss how broad or narrow the topic is.
Share: A few learners share their thoughts. The teacher provides feedback and guidance.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Selecting Writing Topics:
    • A good topic should be interesting, specific, and relevant.
    • Avoid overly broad or overly narrow topics.
    • Example: ❌ Education → ✅ The impact of online learning on high school students
  2. Thesis Statement:
    • A clear, concise sentence that presents the main point or argument of the essay.
    • Example: Online learning improves students' academic performance by allowing flexible schedules and personalized instruction.
  3. Organization of the Essay:
    • Introduction: Introduce the topic and present the thesis.
    • Body Paragraphs: Each paragraph contains a topic sentence, supporting details, and examples.
    • Conclusion: Summarize the key points and restate the thesis in a new way.
  4. Unity and Coherence:
    • Unity: All parts support the main idea.
    • Coherence: Ideas flow logically with the help of transition words (e.g., therefore, in addition, however).

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):
Class Activity:

  1. Provide three broad topics and let students narrow each one down.
  2. Write a thesis statement for this topic: The effects of mobile phones on students.
  3. Arrange the following parts of an essay in logical order:
    • Supporting paragraph 1
    • Conclusion
    • Introduction
    • Supporting paragraph 2

Assignment: Write a three-paragraph essay using the topic: My Favorite Learning Experience. Ensure your essay includes:

  • An introduction with a thesis statement
  • At least two body paragraphs
  • Proper use of transitions and paragraph unity
  • Underline your thesis statement.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were learners able to narrow broad topics into focused essay topics?
  • Did they understand the components of a good thesis statement?
  • Who requires more practice organizing essay paragraphs?
