  • Human economic activities in Liberia.

Instructional Materials

  • Textbook: Geography for Senior Secondary Schools, Grade 11
  • Teaching Aids: Charts showing types of farming, world map showing agricultural regions, projector, colored markers
  • Students' Notebooks and Writing Materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Activity:

  • Show pictures of different farms (rice paddies, livestock, mechanized plantations).
  • Ask students:
    • “Which activities are considered primary industries?”
    • “How do these activities differ from secondary industries like food processing?”
  • Students discuss in pairs and share ideas.

Teacher’s Role:

  • Guide discussion to highlight the definition of primary industries and examples.

Learner’s Role:

  • Share observations and prior knowledge about farming and raw material use.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain primary industries, major types, and classification of agriculture.
  • Use examples from Liberia and West Africa.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  1. Definition of Primary Industries:
    • Activities that extract or produce raw materials directly from the environment.
    • Examples: agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry.
    • Activity: Students list examples of primary industries in their local area.
  2. Major Primary Industries – Agriculture:
    • Agriculture is the cultivation of crops and rearing of animals for food, raw materials, and economic purposes.
    • Activity: Students identify crops (rice, cocoa, cassava) and animals (cattle, goats) in Liberia.
  3. Classification of Agriculture:
    • By Purpose:
      • Subsistence Agriculture: Grown mainly for family consumption.
      • Commercial Agriculture: Grown for sale and profit.
    • By Type:
      • Crop Farming: Cultivation of plants (rice, cocoa, maize).
      • Animal Farming: Rearing livestock (cattle, sheep, poultry).
    • Activity: Students classify provided examples into subsistence/commercial and crop/animal farming.
  4. Factors Affecting Primary Industries:
    • Climate, soil fertility, topography, availability of labor, access to markets.
    • Activity: Students match agricultural activities to the factors that favor them.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask students: “What is the difference between subsistence and commercial agriculture?”
  • Quick oral question: “List two factors that affect crop farming.”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Agriculture is central to Liberia’s economy and other primary industries.
  • Classification helps in understanding production goals and methods.
  • Proper planning of agriculture depends on environmental and socio-economic factors.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Recap the definition of primary industries.
  • Emphasize agriculture as a major primary industry.
  • Highlight classification into subsistence/commercial and crop/animal farming.
  • Link factors affecting agriculture to real examples in Liberia.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

  • Exit Slip/Quiz:
  1. Define primary industries.
  2. Name two major types of agriculture.
  3. Classify cocoa farming in Liberia.
  • Teacher collects responses and provides oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded / Follow-up Activity):

  • Students create a table showing examples of subsistence and commercial farming in Liberia.
  • Write a paragraph explaining how climate and soil affect agriculture in a chosen region.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling Learners: Provide labeled charts and simplified examples.
  • Advanced Learners: Research commercial farming techniques and present orally.
  • Students with Disabilities: Use enlarged diagrams, tactile farming models, or verbal explanations.
