Week 16
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 16, Period III
Topic: Classification of Climate
Sub-topic: Greeks and Koppen’s classifications, Basis of classifications, Advantages and disadvantages

Learning Objectives

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Explain Greeks and Koppen’s climate classifications.
  2. State the basis for each classification.
  3. Identify the advantages and disadvantages of each classification.

Previous Knowledge

Students already know:

  • Definition of climate.
  • Factors affecting climate.
  • Elements of climate and their importance.

Instructional Materials

  • Textbook: Geography for Senior Secondary Schools, Grade 11
  • Teaching Aids: World map, climate zone charts, comparison tables, projector, colored markers
  • Students' Notebooks and Writing Materials

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Activity:

  • Teacher shows pictures of deserts, tropical forests, and polar ice caps.
  • Ask students:
    • “Can all climates in the world be grouped into categories?”
    • “Why do some regions have similar climate patterns?”
  • Record responses on the board.

Teacher’s Role:

  • Facilitate discussion and clarify misconceptions about grouping climates.

Learner’s Role:

  • Share observations and ideas about regional climate similarities.
  • Participate actively in brainstorming.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

Teacher’s Role:

  • Explain Greeks and Koppen’s classifications with examples and visual aids.
  • Compare the two systems and highlight advantages and disadvantages.

Learners’ Activities (Expanded):

  1. Greeks Classification:
    • Basis: Temperature and rainfall.
    • Characteristics: Simple system grouping climates into hot, temperate, and cold zones.
    • Advantages: Easy to understand and remember.
    • Disadvantages: Too general; does not account for vegetation or detailed climate variation.
  2. Koppen’s Classification:
    • Basis: Temperature, rainfall, and vegetation type.
    • Characteristics: Divides world climates into five main groups (A–E) with subtypes.
    • Advantages: More accurate and widely used; reflects actual climate patterns and vegetation.
    • Disadvantages: More complex; requires detailed data for precise classification.
  3. Comparison Table:

Classification

Basis

Advantages

Disadvantages

Greeks

Temp & Rainfall

Simple, easy to learn

Generalized, less precise

Koppen

Temp, Rainfall, Vegetation

Accurate, reflects real patterns

Complex, data-heavy

Activity:

  • Students classify sample data from three locations using both Greeks and Koppen’s methods.
  • Discussion on which classification fits the examples better and why.

Assessment Checks:

  • Ask students to state the basis for each classification.
  • Oral quiz: “Name one advantage and one disadvantage of Koppen’s system.”

Notes (Expanded & Detailed):

  • Greeks classification is historical but still useful for simple understanding.
  • Koppen’s system is scientifically accurate, used for research, agriculture, and environmental planning.
  • Understanding both helps students analyze climate data and compare regions globally.

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Recap Greeks and Koppen climate classifications.
  • Highlight the basis, advantages, and disadvantages of each system.
  • Encourage students to connect classification with climate regions studied in previous lessons.

Evaluation Method (Expanded):

  • Exit Slip/Quiz:
  1. State the basis of Greeks climate classification.
  2. List one advantage and one disadvantage of Koppen’s classification.
  3. Which classification is more accurate and why?
  • Teacher provides immediate oral feedback and clarifications.

Assignment (Expanded / Follow-up Activity):

  • Students research the Koppen climate classification for Liberia and one other country.
  • Draw a comparison table highlighting temperature, rainfall, and vegetation patterns.
  • Prepare a short oral presentation for class discussion next week.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Struggling Learners: Provide a simplified table of classifications with examples.
  • Advanced Learners: Analyze global climate patterns and predict suitable crops for each zone.
  • Students with Disabilities: Use visual aids, enlarged maps, and verbal explanations.

Teacher’s Reflection (After Class)

  • What worked well? ______________________________________________________
  • What needs improvement? _________________________________________________
  • Students’ engagement level: □ High □ Medium □ Low
  • Next steps: Introduce climatic regions/natural zones in Week 17.
