Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Activity:

  • Teacher asks:
  1. “What do you already know about Judaism?”
  2. “Who is considered the founder of Christianity?”
  • Teacher records responses on the board.

  • Provide historical context that Jesus was born into a Jewish community.

Learner’s Role:

  • Share existing knowledge.
  • Respond verbally and actively participate.

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Judaic Origin of Christianity
  • Christianity began within Judaism (Jesus and his disciples were Jews).
  • Similarities: belief in one God, use of Hebrew scriptures (Old Testament).
  • Difference: Christians believed Jesus was the Messiah; Jews awaited another.
Example: Compare the Jewish Ten Commandments to Christ’s Sermon on the Mount.
  1. Jesus Christ the Man
  • Born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth.
  • Preached love, forgiveness, humility, and salvation.
  • Crucified under Pontius Pilate, resurrected (foundation of Christian faith).
Activity: Students create a short timeline of Jesus’ life events.
  1. Christ’s Basic Teachings
  • Love for God and neighbor (Golden Rule).
  • Forgiveness of sins.
  • The Kingdom of God is spiritual, not political.
Example: Compare the Parable of the Good Samaritan with today’s humanitarian acts.
  1. Rise and Decline of the Papacy
  • Papacy = central authority of Roman Catholic Church.
  • Rose in power after Rome’s fall, Popes acted as both spiritual and political leaders.
  • Decline due to corruption, abuses (sale of indulgences), and rise of nationalism.
Example: Pope Gregory VII vs Emperor Henry IV (Investiture Controversy).

Assessment Checks:

  • Oral questions after each section.
  • Example: “Why was the Papacy powerful in medieval Europe?”

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes

Summary:

  • Christianity grew from Judaism.
  • Jesus Christ preached love, humility, and salvation.
  • Papacy rose in power but later declined due to corruption and challenges.

Evaluation Method:

  • Quick quiz (exit slip):
  1. Mention one teaching of Jesus Christ.
  2. State one factor that led to the decline of the Papacy.
  • Teacher collects responses, provides oral feedback.

Assignment (Expanded):

  1. Write a short essay comparing Judaism and Christianity (at least 2 similarities and 2 differences).
  2. Research: Create a chart showing the succession of Popes from the 5th to 10th centuries.
