Lesson Outline (ABC Model)

  1. P – Probe (5–10 min)

Purpose: Activate prior knowledge and spark curiosity.

  • Begin with probing questions:
    • “How do we express gratitude in everyday life?”
    • “Why is praise important in our relationship with God?”
  • Read aloud the opening stanza:

“In the quiet moments of dawn's embrace,
Where sunlight paints the sky with grace,
My heart awakens to the gentle call,
Of gratitude's song, in whispers small.”

  • Ask students to predict the poem’s message about gratitude and praise.
  • Teacher Role: Facilitate discussion and note key ideas.

  1. E – Explore (15–20 min)

Purpose: Engage actively with the text.

  • Students read stanzas I–X and the Coda aloud in groups.
  • Focus on literary elements:
    • Theme: Gratitude, praise, faith, hope, love, grace
    • Imagery & Symbolism: Sunrise, symphony, creation, blessings
    • Tone & Mood: Joyful, reflective, celebratory
  • Activities:
    • Think-Pair-Share analysis of one stanza per pair/group
    • Annotate metaphors, motifs (e.g., “symphony,” “blessings,” “grace”)
    • Role-play stanzas such as “The Dance of Appreciation” or “The Gift of Salvation”
  • Student Activity: Highlight literary devices, discuss meaning, and relate to personal experiences.

  1. A – Analyze & Question (15–20 min)

Purpose: Develop critical thinking and deeper understanding.

  • Pose higher-order questions:
    • How does the poet connect gratitude and praise with everyday life?
    • Which literary devices are most effective in expressing joy and thanksgiving?
    • How does the poem inspire reflection on God’s goodness?
  • Mini analytical tasks:
    • Identify recurring motifs (e.g., gratitude, hope, faith) and their significance
    • Examine narrative voice and rhythm in stanzas such as “The Symphony of Creation”
    • Compare with real-life experiences of thanksgiving or praise in community or worship
  • Teacher Role: Scaffold interpretations, introduce literary terms like personification, imagery, and alliteration.

  1. R – Reflect & Relate (10–15 min)

Purpose: Connect literature to personal, social, or spiritual contexts.

  • Students write reflections:
    • “Which stanza makes me most aware of God’s blessings in my life?”
    • “How can I make gratitude and praise a daily practice?”
  • Creative response options:
    • Sketch a symbolic representation of gratitude and praise (e.g., sun rising, open hands, symphony notes)
    • Compose a short dialogue or poem expressing personal thanks

  1. L – Link & Extend (5–10 min)

Purpose: Consolidate learning and extend thinking.

  • Summarize key points:
    • Gratitude awakens the heart and mind to God’s goodness
    • Praise is an expression of joy, faith, and acknowledgment of blessings
    • Both gratitude and praise cultivate a deeper spiritual life
  • Extension tasks:
    • Comparative essay with another poem about thanksgiving or worship
    • Create a social media post/profile reflecting gratitude and praise
    • Prepare an oral presentation analyzing a stanza and applying it to modern life
