PERIOD 1 & 2: Introduction to Algebraic Fractions and Simplification

PRESENTATION:

Step

Teacher’s Activity

Student’s Activity

Step 1 - Introduction

Introduces the concept of algebraic fractions. Explains that an algebraic fraction is a fraction where the numerator and/or the denominator is an algebraic expression.

Students listen attentively and ask clarifying questions.

Step 2 - Simplification of Algebraic Fractions

Explains the method of simplifying algebraic fractions by finding the LCM of the denominators. Uses an example to show the process.

Students observe the example and take notes on the method of simplification.

Step 3 - Guided Practice

Provides several algebraic fractions for students to simplify under teacher guidance.

Students practice simplifying the algebraic fractions in pairs or groups, seeking help when needed.

Step 4 - Check for Understanding

Engages students in a short quiz to check if they can simplify fractions on their own.

Students attempt the quiz independently and ask for help if needed.

NOTE ON BOARD:
Simplification:

  • Factor both the numerator and denominator.
  • Find the LCM of the denominators.
  • Cancel out common factors.
