Duration: 40 minutes per period
Subject: Mathematics

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

  1. Define and understand the concept of a geometric progression (G.P.).
  2. Identify and use the first term (a), common ratio (r), and nth term of a G.P.
  3. Calculate the nth term of a G.P. using the formula.
  4. Understand and calculate the geometric mean of a G.P.
  5. Determine the sum of the terms of a G.P.
  6. Calculate the sum of an infinite G.P.
  7. Solve practical problems involving real-life situations on G.P.

INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNIQUES:

  • Explanation and demonstration
  • Question and answer
  • Group discussion
  • Guided practice
  • Real-life examples and analogies

INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:

       5. Apply the sum formula to calculate the total amount of a loan after 5 years with an interest rate of 10% compounded annually.

ASSIGNMENT (5 tasks):

  1. Calculate the sum of the infinite series for a=4, r = 0.5.
  2. Solve for the sum of an infinite G.P. where a=20, r = 0.6.
  3. How much will an investment of $100 grow if the interest rate is 8% per annum, compounded continuously?
  4. What is the total value of an investment with an interest rate of 6%, compounded annually for 3 years?
  5. Calculate the sum of the infinite series 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, ...
