Subject: Biology
Grade Level: Grade 12
Date: Week 13
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 13, Period III
Topic: Digestive, Circulatory and Lymphatic Systems
Sub-topic: Digestive System: Nutrition and Alimentary Canal
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, learners will be able to:
- Define digestion and state its functions.
- Explain the different classes of food and their specific importance to the body.
- Identify the major parts of the human alimentary canal and their roles in digestion.
- Recognize the accessory organs involved in digestion and their functions.
Previous Knowledge
Learners have basic knowledge of body systems and their general functions.
Instructional Materials
- Large labeled diagram of the digestive system
- Food samples and flashcards with nutrition information
- Chart showing food groups and their uses
- Pictures/models of digestive organs and glands
Lesson Development – ABC Model
A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask students:
- “What happens to the food you eat after you swallow it?”
- “Why do we eat different types of food?”
- Use a real food item to introduce the lesson (e.g., banana or bread)
B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)
Time: 25–30 minutes
- Nutrition and Classes of Food:
- Carbohydrates: Provide energy
- Proteins: Body-building and repair of tissues
- Fats and Oils: Energy storage and insulation
- Vitamins & Minerals: Regulation of body processes
- Water: Medium for chemical reactions, regulates temperature
- Definition of Digestion:
- Digestion is the process by which large, insoluble food substances are broken down into smaller, soluble forms that can be absorbed into the body.
- Alimentary Canal and Functions:
- Mouth: Ingestion and initial breakdown (chewing & salivary enzymes)
- Esophagus: Transports food to stomach through peristalsis
- Stomach: Churns food, secretes acid and enzymes to digest proteins
- Small Intestine: Major site for digestion and absorption of nutrients
- Large Intestine: Absorbs water and forms feces
- Anus: Elimination of undigested waste
- Accessory Organs:
- Salivary glands: Produce saliva containing amylase
- Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes and releases them into small intestine
- Liver: Produces bile, detoxifies harmful substances
- Teeth and Tongue: Mechanical digestion and movement of food in the mouth
Learners’ Activities (Expanded)
- Identify and label the parts of the digestive system
- Match each food group to its function
- Group discussion: “Why is it important to eat a balanced diet?”
- Observation and description of model alimentary canals
C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)
Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners:
- “Name three parts of the alimentary canal and describe their function.”
- “Which food group gives us energy?”
- “What does the liver produce?”
Evaluation Methods
- Fill-in-the-blank worksheet (parts of digestive system)
- Food group classification activity
- Short oral quiz
- Diagram labelling test
Short Notes (Expanded)
- Nutrition involves the intake and use of food substances by the body.
- Classes of food include carbohydrates, proteins, fats and oils, vitamins, minerals, and water. Each plays a specific role in maintaining health.
- The alimentary canal is a continuous tube from the mouth to the anus. Digestion happens at various points, aided by accessory organs like the liver and pancreas.
- Digestion converts food into simple substances like glucose and amino acids that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
Extra Instructions for Expanded Work
Expanded Notes:
- Provide summary handouts of digestive organs and their enzymes
- Distribute a blank alimentary canal diagram for students to label and annotate
Assignment:
- Write short notes on the functions of the liver, pancreas, and salivary glands
- Complete a table categorizing food items into different food groups
- Prepare a one-minute oral explanation of what digestion is
Optional Extension:
- Research local foods in Liberia and classify them into the six classes of food
Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies
- Provide visual aids for visual learners
- Allow oral answers for learners with writing difficulties
- Use peer pairing to assist students who need help understanding digestion steps
Teacher Reflection
- Did learners correctly identify and sequence the parts of the digestive system?
- Were they able to classify foods accurately into nutrient groups?
- Was the pace suitable for the learners' understanding?
