Grade Level: Grade 12
Week & Period: Week 28, Period V
Date:
Topic: Nervous and Endocrine Systems
Sub-topic: Autonomic Nervous System, Eye and Ear, Effects of STIs and Substance Abuse on the Nervous System
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
- Describe the autonomic nervous system and its functions.
- Identify and label the parts of the eye and ear and explain their functions.
- Discuss how sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and substance abuse affect the nervous system.
- Raise awareness on the dangers of STIs, substance abuse, and how to prevent them.
Previous Knowledge
Learners have already studied the central and peripheral nervous system, types of neurons, reflex arc, and synaptic transmission.
Instructional Materials
- Diagrams of the human eye and ear
- Poster/chart of autonomic nervous system
- Case studies or true stories (fictionalized for education) about effects of drug and STI damage
- Flashcards with symptoms and causes of nervous system disorders
Anticipation (Warm-Up) – 5 minutes
Ask:
- “What happens to your body when you are frightened?”
- “Have you ever noticed how your eyes adjust to light or how you balance when walking?”
Transition to: These are controlled by the autonomic nervous system, eye, and ear.
- Building Knowledge (Main Lesson) – 25 minutes
- Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)
- Involuntary system that controls body functions like heart rate, digestion, and breathing.
- Two parts:
- Sympathetic: fight or flight response
- Parasympathetic: rest and digest
- The Eye
- Sense organ for sight
- Parts: cornea, iris, pupil, lens, retina, optic nerve
- Functions: Light enters through pupil → focused by lens → image formed on retina → message sent to brain.
- The Ear
- Sense organ for hearing and balance
- Parts: outer ear, ear canal, eardrum, middle ear bones, cochlea, auditory nerve
- Functions: Sound waves → vibrations → electrical signals → brain
- Cochlea also helps with balance.
- Effects of STIs and Substance Abuse on the Nervous System
- Some STIs like syphilis and HIV can damage nerves and the brain.
- Substance abuse (alcohol, drugs) can affect memory, movement, judgment, and even cause nerve cell death.
- Addictions can lead to mental health issues.
Learners’ Activities
- Label the parts of the eye and ear in groups.
- Complete a table matching each part with its function.
- Brainstorm and list the effects of drugs and STIs on the nervous system.
- Create an awareness poster warning youth against substance abuse.
Consolidation (Review and Assessment) – 10 minutes
Oral Questions:
- What is the function of the autonomic nervous system?
- What part of the eye helps you focus light?
- How do STIs affect the nervous system?
Homework/Assignment:
- Draw and label the human eye and human ear.
- Write a short paragraph on how to protect yourself from the harmful effects of drugs and STIs.
Short Notes (For Learners)
The autonomic nervous system controls things you don’t think about – like your heartbeat, breathing, and digestion. It works automatically.
The eye helps you see. Light enters the pupil, is focused by the lens, and forms images on the retina.
The ear helps you hear and keep your balance. Sounds are picked up in the ear canal, and the cochlea sends messages to the brain.
Drugs and STIs can damage the brain, nerves, and even cause long-term mental and physical problems. Say no to harmful substances and protect your health.
Expanded Notes/Instructions
- Use a flashlight and mirror to demonstrate pupil contraction.
- Let learners research and present one STI or drug and its effects on the nervous system.
- Emphasize respect and support for those suffering from addiction or health challenges.
Inclusive/Differentiation
- Diagrams for visual learners
- Group discussion for interpersonal learners
- Listening to a brief health podcast for auditory learners
- Coloring diagram sheets for learners with lower literacy level
