Subject: Biology
Grade Level: Grade 12
Week & Period: Week 35, Period VI
Date:
Topic: Refuse Collection & Disposal; First Aid; Revision of Health and Ecology Topics
Sub-topic: Refuse Management, First Aid Treatment, Comprehensive Review of Pollution, Sewage, Water Safety, and Health Topics
Learning Objectives
By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:
- Explain what refuse is and why its disposal is important.
- Describe various methods of refuse collection and disposal.
- State the importance of first aid and identify common emergency treatments.
- Review and summarize all key points on pollution, natural resources, hygiene, and health from Weeks 31–34.
Previous Knowledge
Learners have learned about pollution, water contamination, sewage systems, personal and community hygiene. They understand the health risks of poor environmental management.
Instructional Materials
- Charts showing refuse types and disposal methods
- First aid box or first aid kit illustration
- Role-play cards (scenarios for emergency treatment)
- Summary mind maps or posters from previous weeks
Anticipation (Warm-Up) – 5 minutes
Ask:
💬 “What happens when garbage is left in the street for weeks?”
💬 “What would you do if your friend fainted in school?”
These questions introduce refuse problems and the basics of first aid.
Building Knowledge (Main Lesson) – 25 minutes
- Refuse Collection and Disposal
- Refuse is solid waste from homes, schools, markets, etc.
- Refuse must be collected and disposed of to prevent diseases and pollution.
Methods of Disposal:
- Burying in pits
- Burning (incineration)
- Collection by waste trucks
- Composting for farming
- Landfilling
- Recycling (bottles, plastics)
- First Aid: Definition & Importance
- First aid is the immediate help given to someone who is hurt or sick before the doctor comes.
Common First Aid Situations:
- Fainting: raise legs, loosen clothes, fan air
- Nosebleed: pinch nose and lean forward
- Burns: run cold water over the area
- Cuts: wash and cover with a clean cloth
- Fractures: keep the part still and support with a splint
- Revision: Recap of Ecology and Health Concepts
- Natural resources: renewable and non-renewable
- Pollution: types, causes, effects, and control
- Sewage: methods and economic use
- Water purification: sources, contamination, and methods
- Hygiene: personal and community
- Drug abuse and its dangers
- Importance of immunization
Learners’ Activities
- Group matching game: “Match the refuse to its disposal method.”
- Role-play: Give first aid in assigned emergency scenarios.
- Group revision quiz on topics from previous weeks (using flashcards or Kahoot if available).
Consolidation (Review and Assessment) – 10 minutes
Oral Questions:
- What is refuse and why should it be disposed of properly?
- Name one method of refuse disposal used in your community.
- What do you do if someone faints?
- List three things you’ve learned about water safety and health.
Short Notes (For Learners)
Refuse is waste and must be properly managed to keep the environment clean.
We can burn, bury, compost, or recycle waste.
First aid is the help we give to someone before a doctor arrives – like stopping bleeding or treating a burn.
We must keep our community clean, avoid drug abuse, and protect ourselves through immunization.
Expanded Notes/Instructions
- Let learners brainstorm other emergencies and how to handle them.
- Use real or improvised first aid items for hands-on practice.
- Use this week to reinforce key health habits: handwashing, boiling water, safe refuse disposal.
Inclusive/Differentiation
- Role-play for kinesthetic and dramatic learners
- Summary charts for visual learners
- Short oral recaps for verbal learners
- Peer tutoring during revision
Homework/Assignment
- Write a short guide on how to care for a nosebleed or a burn.
- Interview someone in your community: “How do they dispose of their waste and why?”
