Subject: Biology
Grade Level: Grade 12
Date: Week 10
Lesson Duration: 45 minutes
Week & Period: Week 10, Period II
Topic: Skeletal, Muscular and Reproductive Systems
Sub-topic: Menstrual Cycle, Fertilization, Conception and Cycles of Sexuality

Learning Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the stages of the menstrual cycle and the hormonal control involved.
  2. Describe the process of fertilization and conception.
  3. Understand the concept of sex determination.
  4. Explain the meaning and phases of cycles of sexuality.

Previous Knowledge

Learners are familiar with reproductive organs, sperm and egg cells, and the process of gamete formation.

Instructional Materials

  • Chart showing stages of the menstrual cycle
  • Diagrams of fertilization and zygote formation
  • Hormone flashcards (FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone)
  • Poster illustrating the cycles of sexuality

Lesson Development – ABC Model

A – Anticipation (Warm-up / Starter)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Prompt discussion with:

  • “Why do females menstruate monthly?”
  • “What happens when the sperm meets the egg?”

B – Building Knowledge (Main Lesson Body)

Time: 25–30 minutes

  1. Menstrual Cycle Overview (28-day cycle):
  • Follicular phase: FSH stimulates egg development
  • Ovulation: LH surge causes egg release
  • Luteal phase: Corpus luteum forms; progesterone maintains lining
  • Menstruation: If no fertilization occurs, lining sheds
  1. Hormonal Control:
  • FSH – stimulates follicles
  • LH – triggers ovulation
  • Estrogen – builds uterine lining
  • Progesterone – maintains uterine lining
  1. Fertilization and Conception:
  • Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube
  • Sperm meets egg to form a zygote
  • Zygote travels to uterus and implants
  1. Sex Determination:
  • XX – Female
  • XY – Male
  • The sperm determines the baby's sex
  1. Cycles of Sexuality:
  • Natural physical, emotional, and hormonal changes that occur across a person’s lifetime
  • Begins at puberty and changes with age, environment, and experience
  • Includes phases: puberty, reproductive years, menopause (females), and aging phase

Learners’ Activities (Expanded)

  • Identify menstrual cycle stages using chart
  • Participate in a hormone matching game
  • Watch a short animated video (if available) on fertilization
  • Roleplay hormone changes during menstrual cycle in groups
  • Group discussion on sexuality across life stages

C – Consolidation (Conclusion & Assessment)

Time: 5–10 minutes
Ask learners:

  • “What is the function of progesterone?”
  • “Where does fertilization occur?”
  • “Who determines the sex of a baby?”
  • “What happens in the luteal phase?”

Evaluation Methods

  • Diagram labeling activity (menstrual cycle chart)
  • Short answer quiz
  • In-class oral quiz: “Explain ovulation in your own words”
  • Group work: describe each phase of the cycle of sexuality

Short Notes (Expanded)

  • The menstrual cycle prepares the female body for possible pregnancy.
  • Fertilization is the union of sperm and egg, leading to conception.
  • Sex determination depends on the sex chromosome carried by the sperm.
  • Cycles of sexuality describe how sexual development and expression change over a lifetime.

Extra Instructions for Expanded Work

  • Expanded Notes: Include annotated diagrams of the cycle, hormone table, and simplified charts of fertilization and implantation.
  • Assignment:
    • Draw and label the menstrual cycle showing hormonal changes.
    • Write one paragraph explaining the importance of progesterone.
    • Write two paragraphs explaining what the “cycle of sexuality” means and give examples.
  • Optional Task: Interview a healthcare provider (or research) about common misconceptions about menstruation and fertility.

Differentiation / Inclusive Strategies

  • Use visual aids for students who need image-based learning
  • Offer sentence starters for writing assignments
  • Group discussions help auditory learners
  • Provide simplified versions of hormone charts for slow learners

Teacher Reflection

  • Were students able to follow hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle?
  • Did they understand how conception occurs?
  • Should I revisit sex determination before moving into STIs and health in Week 11?
