Motivational Set (5 minutes)

“Can anyone name some natural resources that Liberia is known for? How do these resources help the country?”

Natural Resources of Liberia:

  • Minerals: Iron ore, gold, diamonds, and bauxite.
  • Agricultural products: Rubber, palm oil, coffee, cocoa, and timber.
  • Forestry: Valuable timber resources.
  • Fisheries: Rich marine resources along the coast.

Natural Resources in the Sub-region:

  • Neighboring countries such as Sierra Leone and Guinea also have rich mineral deposits (diamonds, gold).
  • Ghana is known for cocoa and gold.
  • Nigeria is rich in oil and natural gas.

Importance to Economic Development:

  • Resource exports contribute significantly to foreign exchange earnings.
  • Provide raw materials for local industries.
  • Create employment opportunities.
  • Contribute to infrastructure development through revenues.
