Topic: Industrialization of the Liberian Economy and Concepts of National Income
Sub-topic: Methods of Calculating National Income; Advantages and Limitations of GNP & Per Capita Income

Instructional Objectives

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Identify and explain the different methods of calculating national income.
  2. Analyze the advantages and limitations of using GNP and Per Capita Income.
  3. Apply the understanding of national income to economic analysis in Liberia.

Instructional Materials

  • Charts summarizing income measurement methods
  • Sample GDP/GNP/NNP data from Liberia
  • Calculator and worksheet for practice

Previous Knowledge

Students are familiar with national income terms (GDP, GNP, NNP, Per Capita) and their uses. They are now ready to learn how to calculate them and analyze their practical value.

A – Anticipation (Engagement/Warm-Up)

Motivational Set (5 minutes) Ask:

"How do we count everything produced in a country or earned by its people?" Use their responses to transition into the discussion of national income calculation methods.

B – Building Knowledge (Development)

Teacher’s Explanation (20 minutes)

Methods of Calculating National Income:

  1. Output/Production Method: Measures value of goods and services produced.
  2. Income Method: Adds all incomes (wages, rent, interest, profit) earned in the economy.
  3. Expenditure Method: Adds all spending on goods and services (C + I + G + X - M).

Formulas Introduced:

  • GDP = C + I + G + (X - M)
  • Per Capita Income = National Income ÷ Total Population

Advantages of GNP and Per Capita Income:

  • Useful in international comparisons.
  • Show economic growth and standard of living trends.

Limitations:

  • GNP ignores income inequality and informal sectors.
  • Per Capita Income doesn’t show how wealth is distributed.
  • Hard to calculate accurately in developing nations due to poor records.

Example: Two countries may have the same Per Capita Income, but in one country, wealth may be in the hands of very few people.

Class Activity (10 minutes)

Give students mock data on a country’s income, population, and output. Ask them to:

  • Calculate GDP using expenditure method.
  • Calculate Per Capita Income.
  • Identify one limitation from their results.

C – Consolidation (Wrap-Up and Evaluation)

Teacher Summary (3 minutes) Highlight the three methods and stress the importance of knowing their strengths and weaknesses when analyzing Liberia’s economy.

Assessment (7 minutes)

Multiple Choice:

  1. The income method of calculating national income includes: A. Total land size
    Wages, rent, interest, and profit
    C. Import tax only
    D. Number of factories
  2. One limitation of Per Capita Income is: A. It shows standard of living
    It ignores wealth distribution
    C. It is always accurate
    D. It counts savings

Short Answer: 3. List the three methods of measuring national income. 4. Explain one reason GNP might not show true economic condition in Liberia.

Assignment

In a paragraph, describe the method you think is best for calculating national income and why. Give one reason to support your choice.

Teacher's Reflection (Questions Only)

  1. Were students able to identify the three methods correctly?
  2. Did they understand the advantages and limitations of each approach?
  3. Could learners apply the formulas correctly using the provided data?
  4. Did students connect the lesson to Liberia’s economic situation?
  5. Were learners actively engaged and did the activity reinforce the concept?
