Teacher’s Explanation (20 minutes)

Traditional Economy:

  • An economic system based on customs, traditions, and beliefs.
  • Often found in rural, non-industrial communities.
  • Main activities include farming, fishing, hunting, and barter trading.

Features of Liberian Traditional Economy:

  1. Subsistence Agriculture – Production is mainly for family use.
  2. Barter System – Goods and services exchanged without money.
  3. Low Technology Use – Simple tools and techniques.
  4. Cultural Influence – Economic decisions based on customs.
  5. Community Ownership – Land and resources shared within the community.
  6. Limited Specialization – Few people specialize in specific jobs.

Example: In rural Nimba or Bong counties, many families still grow food for consumption and trade with neighbors rather than sell in markets.

Strengths:

  • Strong community ties.
  • Low reliance on imported goods.

Limitations:

  • Low productivity.
  • Limited access to modern technology.
