  1. Analyze the role of phrases and clauses in enhancing writing style.
  2. Compose extended writing using a variety of phrases and clauses accurately.
  3. Edit peer work for phrase and clause use, punctuation, and coherence.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Opening Discussion Questions:

  • "How can a sentence become more interesting by simply adding a phrase or clause?"
  • "Have you read a passage recently that impressed you because of how it was written? What made it powerful?"

Quick Starter:

  • Present two versions of a short paragraph: one with simple sentences, one with varied sentence structures.
  • Students compare which is more engaging and why.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Stylistic Use of Phrases and Clauses

Mini-Lesson:

  • Review sentence expansion using:
    • Introductory phrases (e.g., In the blink of an eye, she vanished.)
    • Embedded adjective clauses (e.g., The man who wore the red hat disappeared.)
    • Participial phrases (e.g., Running for his life, the boy escaped the dog.)

Example Analysis:

  • Read a descriptive paragraph and highlight the variety of phrase and clause structures.
  • Discuss impact on tone and rhythm.

Class Exercise:

  • Take a basic sentence (e.g., The dog barked.) and expand it five different ways using different types of phrases and clauses.

Peer Task:

  • Students swap sentences and improve structure using clauses and phrases.
  1. Editing and Improving Writing

Mini-Lesson:

  • Common problems:
    • Run-on sentences from improper clause use
    • Misplaced modifiers
    • Fragment errors (incomplete clauses)

Correction Practice:

  • Students correct 10 flawed sentences, rewriting each with proper phrase/clause structure.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Major Writing Task:

  • Compose a 200-word narrative titled: *"The Moment Everything Changed."
    • Include:
      • At least 4 different phrases (e.g., prepositional, participial, appositive)
      • At least 3 different clauses (e.g., noun clause, adjective clause, adverbial clause)
      • Correct punctuation and varied sentence types

Editing Workshop:

  • Exchange drafts with a partner for review.
  • Use a checklist to assess:
    • Variety of sentence structures
    • Accuracy of phrase/clause use
    • Grammar and coherence

Homework Assignment:

  1. Expansion Drill:
    • Given 5 simple sentences, expand each using at least one phrase and one clause.
  2. Phrase & Clause Review Sheet:
    • Complete a table categorizing 15 phrases and 10 clauses by type and function.
  3. Final Draft Submission:
    • Edit your narrative and submit the polished version with all revisions marked.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Are students writing with more syntactic variety?
  • Who demonstrates strong editorial judgment in peer reviews?
  • Who still struggles with identifying and using specific phrase/clause types correctly?
