A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Prompt Discussion:

  • Ask: "What is the most exciting speech you've ever listened to? What made it memorable?"
  • Introduce the focus of the week: Essay Writing and Speech Development using appropriate verb forms and grammar.

Warm-Up Activity:

  • In pairs, students list 5 different verbs and convert each into the 5 principal forms (base, s-form, -ing, past, past participle).
  • Example: speak → speaks, speaking, spoke, spoken

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Essay Writing: Narrative and Descriptive Essays

Structure Review:

  • Introduction: Hook, Background, Thesis
  • Body: Paragraphs with Topic Sentences
  • Conclusion: Summary and Reflection

Sample Narrative Prompt:
"A day I will never forget"

Guided Writing Exercise:
Students brainstorm and outline their essays before writing full drafts. Emphasize paragraph unity and coherence.

Prompt:

  • Encourage use of expressive language and sensory details.
  • Include at least 5 verbs in perfect tenses and 3 phrasal verbs.

 

  1. Speech Writing & Oral Practice

Model Structure:

  • Greeting
  • Purpose Statement
  • Main Points (2–3)
  • Call to Action / Conclusion

Speech Prompt:
"The Role of Youth in National Development."

Activity: Each student writes and presents a 1–2 minute speech. Feedback focuses on grammar, clarity, delivery, and fluency.

 

C – Consolidation (Reflection & Practice):

Class Discussion: "How can proper verb use improve your writing and speaking?"

Homework Assignment:

  1. Write a 300-word descriptive essay about your neighborhood, using 5 phrasal verbs and 5 different perfect tense verbs.
  2. Write a speech on “Why Every Student Should Learn Public Speaking.”
  3. Verb Form Worksheet: Convert 10 base verbs into all five forms and use each in a sentence.
