A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Questions:

  • "When was the last time you had to convince someone of your opinion?"
  • "Why is it important to use the right verb tense in storytelling?"

Warm-Up Game:
Verb Transformation Race – Learners compete in groups to change verbs into:

  • Past Perfect
  • Present Perfect Progressive
  • Future Perfect
    Example Verbs: achieve, build, support, live, explore

Guided Practice: Fill-in-the-blank

Verb Challenge Activity:
Students write 6 sentences – each using a different perfect or progressive tense, then swap papers for peer review.

 

  1. Creative/Narrative Writing Drill

Prompt:
“You were chosen to represent your school in an international event. Write about the preparation and your experience.”

  • Use at least 5 phrasal verbs (e.g., turn up, break down, look forward to, catch up, put off)
  • Include one paragraph in Present Perfect
  • Another in Past Perfect

In-class activity:
Pair-share to read each other's paragraphs aloud for feedback.

 

  1. Speech Writing and Oral Practice

Theme: “Building a Better Liberia Starts With Me.”

Steps:

  • Brainstorming session: What changes would you make if you were a youth leader?
  • Draft: Use at least 3 perfect tense structures
  • Practice and Present: 1–2 minutes in front of class

Discussion Prompt:
“How does writing a speech differ from writing a story? Which one do you prefer and why?”

  4. Edit the Paragraph:
    Find and correct 5 verb tense errors in a provided short narrative.

 

Homework Assignment:

  1. Essay Writing: Write a 400-word narrative titled “The Day Everything Changed.” Use at least 4 perfect tenses and 3 phrasal verbs.
  2. Speech Task: Prepare a 1-minute speech: “The Power of Determination” using at least 5 advanced tenses.
  3. Grammar Worksheet: Fill in a verb table for 10 new verbs and use them in past perfect and future perfect tenses.
