Starter Question:

  • “What verb tense would you use to talk about your future dreams?”
  • Quick quiz: Write a short sentence about yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

Warm-Up Game:
Tense Toss: Toss a soft ball around; each student says a sentence using a given tense when they catch the ball.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

Dialogue Activity:
Learners form pairs and write short dialogues using at least 4 different tenses. Example topic: “Planning a surprise party.”

Sample exchange:
A: Have you bought the balloons?
B: Not yet. I will buy them on my way home.

 

  1. Creative Writing: Paragraph Expansion

Prompt:
"Describe a memorable moment in your life using at least four different verb tenses."

Requirements:

  • Paragraph should include at least one sentence each in:
    • Present Simple
    • Past Simple
    • Present Perfect
    • Future Perfect

Group Brainstorm:
Generate verb lists on the board, e.g., “run,” “try,” “hope,” “finish,” and convert them into all six tenses.

Tense Detective – Learners get mixed-tense paragraphs and must underline the verbs, identify the tense, and justify its use.

Discussion Prompt:
“How does knowing the correct tense improve your story or speech?”
