Date:

Specific Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Analyze the structure of a well-written creative story.
  2. Identify appropriate verb tenses in creative and expository writing.
  3. Demonstrate improved control in using phrasal verbs and verb phrases to enhance narrative writing.
  4. Edit their writing using proofreading checklists.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Starter Discussion:

  • “What makes a story interesting?”
  • “What’s the last story you read or heard that stuck with you?”

Quick Brainstorm (Board Activity):
Students list 3 verbs they think would appear in a ghost story, a funny story, and a romantic story.
→ E.g. scream, stumble, whisper (Ghost); laugh, slip, tease (Funny); love, write, cry (Romantic)

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Understanding Narrative Flow

Mini-Lesson:
Introduce the Five Elements of Narrative Writing:

  • Introduction/Exposition
  • Rising Action
  • Climax
  • Falling Action
  • Resolution

Illustrative Example:
Read a short sample story aloud. Students identify the five narrative parts and list the verbs used in each segment. Emphasize the shift in tense (e.g., from past perfect in exposition to past simple in action).

  1. Verb Consistency in Narratives

Concept:
Good writing maintains tense consistency unless a shift in time is necessary.

Examples:
She had planned to leave early, but she missed the train.
She had planned to leave early, but she misses the train.

Task:
Students correct the verb tenses in a paragraph with intentional errors.
Example:
Original: I walked into the room and see the dog. It barked loudly and jump on me.
Corrected: I walked into the room and saw the dog. It barked loudly and jumped on me.

  1. Using Phrasal Verbs to Enhance Dialogue

Examples and Use in Dialogue:

  • break down, turn up, get away, hold on, run into

Pair Practice:
Each pair writes a 6-line dialogue using at least three phrasal verbs and proper tense consistency.
Example:
A: Did you run into Jake yesterday?
B: Yes! He turned up at my cousin’s birthday party unexpectedly.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Group Writing Task – Round Robin Style:
Each group writes one paragraph of a group story, making sure to use consistent tense and include at least one phrasal verb. Stories are rotated among groups for continuation. Final product should have:

  • 3 paragraphs
  • Minimum of 3 verb tenses
  • 3 phrasal verbs

Peer Reflection Prompt:

  • “Which part of the story was the most interesting? Why?”
  • “Was the verb tense consistent and easy to follow?”

Homework Assignment:

  1. Grammar Drill:
Rewrite the following using correct verb tense:
    a) I see her yesterday at the party.
    b) He had went to the bank before I arrived.
    c) She is writing the poem before dinner.
  2. Creative Writing:
Write a one-page story titled: “The Day Everything Changed.”
    Requirements:
  • Use at least 4 verb tenses
  • Include 4 different phrasal verbs
  • Highlight all verbs in your draft
  1. Editing Task:
Exchange your story with a classmate. Check for:
  • Tense consistency
  • Phrasal verb usage
  • Spelling and punctuation

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Were learners able to identify tense inconsistencies in their writing?
  • Did phrasal verbs appear naturally in student dialogue and narratives?
  • Which students need reinforcement with verb phrase structure or tense shifting?
