Specific Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Review and reinforce all major grammar concepts tested in WASSCE Papers 1–3.
  2. Identify and correct grammatical, structural, and mechanical errors.
  3. Apply learned skills independently under exam-like conditions.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Opening Questions:

  • “What grammar topics still confuse you the most?”
  • “What can you do when you’re unsure of an answer in an exam?”

Warm-Up Activity:

  • Quick 5-question review (1 per skill area: concord, punctuation, summary, sentence rewriting, essay opening).
  • Discuss which ones were challenging and why.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Error Spotting and Correction Workshop

Mini-Lesson:

  • Discuss error types: subject-verb disagreement, misused modifiers, spelling and punctuation faults.
  • Use examples from actual past WASSCE scripts or simulated errors.

Practice Task:

  • Provide 10 flawed sentences. Students identify and correct all errors.
  • Share corrections in small groups and explain why they’re correct.
  1. Sentence Combination and Style Enhancement

Mini-Lesson:

  • How to combine short, choppy sentences using conjunctions, phrases, and clauses.

Activity:

  • Rewrite 5 short sentences into 2–3 complex or compound sentences.
  1. Final Drill: Mixed Grammar Challenge

Group Challenge:

  • Each group receives a different WASSCE-type mini test:
    • Group A: Objective correction (10 MCQs)
    • Group B: Comprehension and summary (short version)
    • Group C: Essay outline planning and intro writing
  • Rotate after 15 minutes; each group attempts each task.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Timed Independent Practice:

  • Students answer 15 multiple-choice questions (grammar-focused).
  • Write 1 summary of a short passage (5 points).
  • Draft the introduction and conclusion to one essay question.

Review Discussion:

  • What section did you finish easily?
  • What skills still need improvement?

Homework:

  1. Grammar Self-Assessment:
    • List 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses in your grammar skills.
  2. Correction and Reflection:
    • Choose 3 grammar errors you have made this term. Explain each error and how to avoid it.
  3. Revision Folder:
    • Collect best essay paragraph, best summary, and most improved comprehension response.
