  2. Draft formal and informal letters using proper structure and grammar.
  3. Write clear, coherent essays using appropriate formats and vocabulary.

 

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Opening Questions:

  • “What’s the easiest and hardest part of writing a WASSCE essay?”
  • “What kind of mistakes can make a letter or essay score low marks?”

Starter Task:

  • Show a WASSCE Paper 2 question and ask students to brainstorm what it’s asking for, structure expected, and tone to be used.

 

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Understanding Essay Types in WASSCE

Mini-Lesson:

  • Explain the four major types tested:
    • Narrative
    • Descriptive
    • Argumentative
    • Expository

Example Exercise:

  • Review 2 sample WASSCE questions per type.
  • Discuss keywords, expectations, and formats.

Practice Task:

  • Students group into 4 teams, each selects one essay type, and outlines a response to a past WASSCE question.
  1. Letter Writing Structure

Mini-Lesson:

  • Compare formal and informal letter formats: address, salutation, body, ending.

Sample Task:

  • Students analyze two letters (one formal, one informal) and label components.

Group Practice:

  • In pairs, draft the introduction and conclusion of a formal letter: Write to your local council asking for improvements in community sanitation.
  1. Common Grammar Issues in WASSCE Writing

Review Focus:

  • Sentence structure
  • Tense consistency
  • Punctuation
  • Word choice

Correction Drill:

  • Provide a paragraph from a WASSCE essay with 10 errors. Students correct individually, then peer review.

 

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

In-Class Task:

  • Choose 1 of 2 real WASSCE letter/essay questions. Students draft full response under timed conditions (35 mins).

Peer Review:

  • Exchange papers and assess using a scoring rubric: content, organization, grammar, and mechanics.

Discussion:

  • What writing challenges emerged?
  • What techniques helped with planning and coherence?

Homework:

  1. Essay Practice:
    • Choose another past WASSCE essay question (any type), plan and write full essay.
  2. Letter Task:
    • Write an informal letter to a friend describing your final year experience.
  3. Correction Journal:
    • Collect 5 common writing errors from today’s class and explain the corrections.
