Specific Objectives:

By the end of this lesson, learners should be able to:

  1. Accurately answer comprehension questions from past WASSCE papers.
  2. Identify key ideas and supporting details in passages.
  3. Summarize information concisely without copying directly from the text.

A – Anticipation (Engage Learners):

Opening Questions:

  • “What makes a comprehension question difficult for you?”
  • “Why do students lose marks in the summary section of WASSCE?”

Starter Task:

  • Read a 5-sentence short paragraph aloud. Ask students to summarize it in one sentence and identify the main idea.

B – Building Knowledge (Core Content):

  1. Comprehension Question Types

Mini-Lesson:

  • Identify different comprehension question types:
    • Literal (direct answers)
    • Inferential (reading between lines)
    • Vocabulary in context
    • Reference (pronoun/word linkage)

Practice Task:

  • Use a past WASSCE comprehension passage and categorize each question.

Group Task:

  • In groups of 3–4, answer one question type each and present their strategy to the class.
  1. Effective Summary Writing Techniques

Mini-Lesson:

  • Rules for WASSCE summary:
    • Use your own words
    • Be concise and avoid repetition
    • Focus only on relevant points
    • Follow the number of points required

Example:

  • Show a WASSCE summary question with model answers.
  • Analyze the mistakes in copying phrases or exceeding word limits.

Practice Task:

  • Rewrite a long paragraph into 5 key points (not more than 10 words each).
  1. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Class Review:

  • Identify typical student errors:
    • Quoting text directly
    • Writing full essays instead of concise summaries
    • Missing the main idea

Correction Drill:

  • Distribute an answer script with flawed responses.
  • Students revise in pairs and discuss corrections.

C – Consolidation (Application and Reflection):

Timed Task:

  • Answer a full WASSCE comprehension passage with 5 questions and a summary section (10 points total) within 40 minutes.

Peer Review:

  • Exchange responses and grade using a checklist:
    • Clear answers?
    • Main ideas correctly identified?
    • Summary format respected?

Discussion:

  • What helped in identifying the main idea?
  • Which part was most challenging?

Homework:

  1. Comprehension Practice:
    • Answer 5 questions from a fresh WASSCE comprehension passage.
  2. Summary Practice:
    • Summarize a 200-word article from a newspaper or textbook in 5 bullet points.
  3. Reflection Log:
    • Write 1 paragraph reflecting on personal comprehension and summary skills improvement.

Teacher’s Reflection:

  • Who has grasped how to avoid copying in summaries?
  • Which question types need more practice?
  • Are learners improving their reading speed and information extraction?
